William C. Campbell is an Irish scientist. In October 2015, because Kazuo and Kimura discovered a new drug called avermectin, its derivative ivermectin fundamentally reduced the incidence rate of river blindness and elephantiasis. [1] Together with Youyou Tu and Zhi Omura, they won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. [2]

Abstract

Parasitic diseases including river blindness and lymphatic filariasis affect hundreds of millions of people annually. The discovery of the drug ivermectin has provided humankind with a powerful new means to combat these severe diseases. To a very large extent the drug was brought about by "simple" science.
