In 1958, after graduating from Yamanashi University, Tomura went to Tokyo Motian Industrial University (senior high school) to teach at night and study part-time; In 1968, he obtained a doctor's degree in pharmacy from Tokyo University; In 1970, he obtained a doctor's degree in chemistry from Tokyo University of Science, which was his second doctor's degree; In 1975, he joined Beili University in Japan as a teacher; In 2005, he was elected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; In 2007, he retired from Beili University; In 2015, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine [2]; In 2016, he was awarded the honorary doctorate of Shanghai Jiaotong University [3].

Tomura has been engaged in the research of microbial active substances for a long time, and is a world-class academic leader in this field. The avermectin discovered in the research is praised as one of the most important inventions that have contributed to mankind since the discovery of penicillin in the 20th century [3].
