Advanced Materials - 2012 - Zhang - Theranostics Mesoporous Silica‐Coated Gol.jpg

Theranostics: Mesoporous Silica-Coated Gold Nanorods as a Light-Mediated Multifunctional Theranostic Platform for Cancer Treatment (Adv. Mater. 11/2012) (page 1349)

Zhenjiang Zhang, Liming Wang, Jing Wang, Xiumei Jiang, Xiaohui Li, Zhijian Hu, Yinglu Ji, Xiaochun Wu and Chunying Chen

On page 1418 X. Wu, C. Chen, and co-workers develop mesoporous silica-coated gold nanorods (Au@SiO2) as a versatile platform for imaging, chemotherapeutics, and hyperthermia. The Au@SiO2 thus keeps both the unique functions of mesoporous silica nanoparticles and gold nanorods, and also provides a new functionality: lightcontrolled drug release. With integrated functions, such multifunctional theranostic systems are critical to optimize therapeutic efficacy and to improve safety of therapeutic regimes. They will provide more opportunities for on-demand therapy, paving the way to personalized medicine.

Biological Templates: High-Density Hotspots Engineered by Naturally Piled-Up Subwavelength Structures in Three-Dimensional Copper Butterfly Wing Scales for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Detection

Yongwen Tan, Jiajun Gu, Linhua Xu, Xining Zang, Dingxin Liu, Wang Zhang, Qinglei Liu, Shenmin Zhu, Huilan Su, Chuanliang Feng, Genlian Fan and Di Zhang

Very recently, wing scales of natural Lepidopterans (butterflies and moths) manifested themselves in providing excellent three dimensional (3D) hierarchical structures for surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. But the origin of the observed enormous Raman enhancement of the analytes on 3D metallic replicas of butterfly wing scales has not been clarified yet, hindering a full utilization of this huge natural wealth with more than 175 000 3D morphologies. Herein, the 3D sub‐micrometer Cu structures replicated from butterfly wing scales are successfully tuned by modifying the Cu deposition time. An optimized Cu plating process (10 min in Cu deposition) yields replicas with the best conformal morphologies of original wing scales and in turn the best SERS performance. Simulation results show that the so‐called “rib‐structures” in Cu butterfly wing scales present naturally piled‐up hotspots where electromagnetic fields are substantially amplified, giving rise to a much higher hotspot density than in plain 2D Cu structures. Such a mechanism is further verified in several Cu replicas of scales from various butterfly species. This finding paves the way to the optimal scale candidates out of ca. 175 000 Lepidopteran species as bio‐ emplates to replicate for SERS applications, and thus helps bring affordable SERS substrates as consumables with high sensitivity, high reproducibility, and low cost to ordinary laboratories across the world.

Bioinspired Electrospun Knotted Microfibers for Fog Harvesting

Hua Dong, Nü Wang, Li Wang, Hao Bai, Jing Wu, Yongmei Zheng, Yong Zhao, Lei Jiang

Spider silk can collect water from fog, thus providing a promising way to relieve drought in arid areas. However, large-scale fabrication of artificial spider silk is still a challenging task at present. Y. Zhao, L. Jiang et al. realized this object on p. 1153 ff. by co-axial electrospinning and verified the fog-harvesting properties of the as-obtained fibers by water-collection experiments.

Synthesis and Fluorescence Study of a Quaternized Copolymer Containing Pyrene for DNA-Hybridization Detection

Lingye Yang, Min Zhao, Ruichen Zhang, Jie Dong, Ting Zhang, Prof. Dr. Xiaowei Zhan and Prof. Dr. Guojie Wang

On p. 4099 ff., G. J. Wang et al. present a quaternized copolymer-containing pyrene that can bind to single-stranded DNA by electrostatic interactions to form a complex probe. It can be used to detect DNA hybridization.

Energy Storage: A Percolating Membrane with Superior Polarization and Power Retention for Rechargeable Energy Storage

Xian Ning Xie,Yuzhan Wang,Qian Wang,Kian Ping Loh

An entirely new class of membranes with superior polarization is presented by Xian Ning Xie and co-workers, on page 76. The polarization of such a membrane is up to a million times that of conventional polarizable materials and, in practice, the membrane is immediately applicable for energy storage and associated technologies, such as hybrid/electric vehicles, solar panels, power grids, and consumer electronics.
