Left hand or right hand---teaching or researching?

Recently, there are many discussions about the role of teachers in university on the blog. And some think a teacher should put the teaching as a core of their job, meanwhile others think a teacher should do some research in order to teach well. Every groups have their evidences to support their point, and also have enough specific examples to prove the opposite is wrong.

As I observed, in general, as a teacher, if he has done a good research, he has chance to be a good teacher because many disciplines in university are more explex both in spaces and depth. Even more importantly is that there may be some complicated links between research and teaching. Thus, we may choose to take teaching and researching all into consideration in the long run. And in general, we have all known that doing research is always more difficult and gives us some challenges and chance to "grow up".

Other important thing is that we should cultivate the ability of creative thinking for university students,  because at the university level, we should put more attention to the development of students' of thinking and shouldn't be limited  just to pass knowlege to them.

The reasons for so many discussions on the blog might be with other issues outside the teaching or researching. It might be the professor promotion conditions, and some people complain that there are more weights with reasearch. Meanwhile, other people are dissatisfied with those teachers who are careless with their teaching, and they expect those teachers should put more attention to their teaching instead of researching.

However, we should keep this in mind that we shouldn't blame the research itself, we should blame the careless teachers. For as a professional teacher, he will never sacrifice teaching for researching because the relation between researching and teaching may be hand in hand. So why do you have to cut off your left hand just for your right hand?
