批判与赞赏的平衡

刚改完一个文稿，叹：“这写文章真的比生小孩还难!" 旁边做家务的妻子马上说一句：“你生一个试试！”转念一想，我改口道：“这写文章真的不比生小孩容易。”
两轮评审，总有几个意见是有关语气和措辞方面的。也许是平时阅读习惯了批判精神，写作时不自然地将这种批判精神发扬光大。自己写得痛快淋漓，别人读起来可能不是那么回事。从自己的角度，别人那样做有不合理的地方，提出来加以改正，这本来是好的。可是，如果不给任何情面地一味批判，势必会令人觉得自己不够宽容。批判与赞赏、理和情，不可偏废。
试举一例说明。在评论某个方法时，我这样写的：
“the uncertainty in the Contractor’s cost estimate is not well characterized by the statistical method proposed by ....”
评审意见是： What does “is not well” mean? Is there a better way? How do we know it is better? Etc.
我是这样回复的：“Is there a better way” is a fair question to ask. My short answer is that we might not need to. For example, in this newly developed model there is no need to directly assess the accuracy of cost estimate. I will rephrase this sentence in the revised manuscript.
最后将文字作如下改动：
... without a reliable database that permits direct comparisons of estimated costs and actual costs, a characterization of the uncertainty in the Contractor’s cost estimate is a very difficult task. Innovative indeed, the proposed statistical method for estimating the variance of the cost estimate might not represent the true value.
