    Lawrence Ferlinghetti（劳伦斯·弗林盖蒂，1919.3.24-2021.2.22）是美国诗人、画家、社会活动家、城市之光书店建立者，其作品涉及诗歌、译作、小说、戏剧、艺术评论和影视剧本。

    今天是他逝世后的第一个冥诞，我翻译几条他的语录。

The state of the world calls out for poetry to save it.

世界的现状召唤着诗歌来拯救世界。

Poetry is eternal graffiti written in the heart of everyone.

I was on television a couple of years ago and the reporter asked me, "How does it feel being on mainstream media? It's not often poets get on mainstream media." I said, "Well I think you're the dominant media, the dominant culture, but you're not the mainstream media. The mainstream media is still the high culture of intellectuals: writers, readers, editors, librarians, professors, artists, art critics, poets, novelists, and people who think. They are the mainstream culture, even though you may be the dominant culture."

    几年前我上了一次电视，记者问我：“上了主流媒体是什么感受？”我回答说，“这个嘛，我认为你们是处于支配地位的媒体，处于支配地位的文化，但你们算不上主流媒体。主流媒体仍属于作家、读者、编辑、图书馆员、教授、艺术家、艺术批评家、诗人、小说家和注重思考的人这些知识分子所构成的上流文化。他们才是主流文化，就算你们也许是处于支配地位的文化。”

Invent a new language anyone can understand.

发明一种任何人都懂的新语言。

The art has to make it on its own, without explanations, and it’s the same for poetry. If the poem or the painting has to be explained, then it’s a failure in communication.

    艺术品得靠自己征服受众，无需解释，对于诗歌同样如此。如果诗歌或画作还需要解释，那就是传播的失败。

Poetry must be capable of answering the challenge of apocalytpic times, even if this means sounding apocaltypic.

诗歌必须能够回应末世时代的挑战，即便这意味着诗歌自身会带有末世论的味道。

We have to raise the consciousness; the only way poets can change the world is to raise the consciousness of the general populace.

我们必须提高觉悟；诗人能够改变世界的唯一方式就是提高老百姓的觉悟。

Poetry is the shadow cast by our streetlight imaginations.

垮掉派诗人、旧金山城市之光书店创始人劳伦斯·费林盖蒂（Lawrence Ferlinghetti）于当地时间2月22日晚去世，享年101岁。

费林盖蒂于1919年3月24日在纽约出生，他是垮掉派运动的中心人物之一，缔造与传承了垮掉派文学经典，但又对垮掉派保持了批判立场。他曾出版三十余部诗集，其代表作包括《心灵的科尼岛》，销售量达数百万册。他也是著名的“城市之光图书公司”的出版人，该公司出版了金斯堡的《嚎叫》，也曾出版过杰克·凯鲁亚克的作品。

1953 年，劳伦斯·费林盖蒂在旧金山创立先锋文化圣地“城市之光”书店，如今在旧金山，也有一条以他命名的街道。费林盖蒂在1994年的一次采访中说：“书店是诗人闲逛的自然场所。” 如他所言，“城市之光”吸引了西海岸知识分子，后来成为旅游胜地。

劳伦斯•弗林盖蒂的诗集《心灵的科尼岛》最初于1958年出版，其中包含的他最著名的诗篇，如《我在等待》和《拾破烂者的助奏》，都是为爵士乐伴奏而写。诗人在诗中反映了他在20世纪50年代的所思所想，形成了心灵的科尼岛——一种灵魂的竞技场。2017年，上海译文出版社推出了该作的中文版。

2019年，100岁的劳伦斯·费林盖蒂还出版了小说《小男孩》。这是一部融合了自传、哲学、诗歌和文学批评的实验性作品。
