《圣经》告诉我们：“六日你要做工，第七日要安息，使牛、驴可以歇息……”（Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.）这话有时也难落实，特别是在要细数花落知多少的岁暮时节。

有趣的是，在这句话的前面，上帝老人家要土地也歇息：“六年你要耕种田地，收藏土产。只是第七年要叫地歇息，不耕不种，使你民中的穷人有吃的；他们所剩下的，野兽可以吃。你的葡萄园和橄榄园也要照样办理。”（《出埃及记》第23章）

And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof: But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed. （Exodus 23: 10-11）

这里说的是以色列人的整年休耕，看起来有点儿懒散，却是很高明的土地政策——如果把定期的一年改为“活期”的，就更圆满了。在《圣经》里还有些地方说到“安息年”，在土地休息的时候，人也自省。

我不明白的是，土地歇息时，收获从哪儿来？老人家还说，“在你们的地收割庄稼，不可割尽田角，也不可拾取所遗落的。不可摘尽葡萄园的果子，也不可拾取葡萄园所掉的果子，要留给穷人和寄居的。”（《利未记》第19章）

And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God. (Leviticus 19: 9-10)

    上帝的和谐思想里，包容了人与土地的和谐，人与动物的和谐，还有穷人与富人的和谐。他的葡萄园本来应该很美，可老人家看到的却是烂葡萄——对那些“房屋接着房屋，土地连着土地以至不留余地的，只顾自己独居的”，他老人家说：“悲哀呀！” （Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth! (Isaiah 5: 8)）
