I have worked for more than a decade toward an affordable, practical Open

Access model.  That said, I am dismayed to read such a one-sided

announcement about a panel discussion on the subject.  Publication of

scholarly articles costs money, IN ADDITION TO the cost of the research

being reported.  Publication costs included in research grants have not yet

caught up to the real, full cost of publication.  For many journals,

libraries pick up the remaining costs through subscription charges.  Some of

the best known open access journals depend on private endowments to cover

the missing publication costs.

Pointing the finger at for-profit publishers and referring to "injustice",

while lauding open access journals and not mentioning their difficulties in

finding a successful business model, is misleading and contrary to the

spirit of scholarly debate. A successful open access business model is the

goal of many non-profit publishers such as non-profit societies, and it

remains difficult and elusive.  I hope that the panel will be well informed

and all sides will be represented, unlike the announcement.
