How bad is the US economy?

Well, my TIAA-CREF has lost $20k+ this quarter, and I have just realized that my salary today is the same as that on July 1, 2008. I am not complaining, just noticing these little things when I am fine-tuning my model (again).
Maybe it's time to go after Plan B...
