On the Internet there are many sites showing various visual illusions, but the titles or catch phrases such sites usually use is: the eyes are cheating the brain. When I read Dr. Yong Lie's blog “头脑眼睛”, on the one hand, it arose my respect for Dr.Lie's manner of reverse thinking; on the other hand, it also spurred me to ponder over whether it is really that “the brain is cheating the eyes” or that “the brain is cheating the eyes”.

After considering the matter for a while, I reached the conclusion that it is more proper to say that“the eyes are cheating the brain” than to say that “the brain is cheating the eyes”. The explanation for my conclusion is as follows.

In the human visual system, the visual information regarding the outside world passes from the eyes to the brain in one direction --- see the attached picture. (Once it reaches the brain -- which includes the thalamus, the cerebral cortex, and some other brain substrates -- the information does go bi-directionally.) Therefore, one can say that the eyes are cheating the brain when the information passing from the eyes to the brain is not 100% faithful about the outside world. On the other hand, as there is no information passing from the brain to the eyes, it does not make any sense to say that the brain is cheating the eyes.
