The Campus Berlin-Dahlem with the Free University of Berlin (FU), the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics (MPIMG) harbors a significant number of groups working at the interface of life sciences (molecular biology, genome research) and formal sciences (mathematics, computer science). The mathematical and computational approaches to study biological questions are manifold, covering mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At the same time any of these approaches can be applied in diverse application areas which, taken together, makes the field hard to master for a student. The unique concentration at FU and MPIMG offers an exceptional opportunity to familiarize students with the breadth of formal methods in computational biology and scientific computing and to expose them to the scope of applied questions one can study using these tools.

Now you can only apply for PhD in 2010.

Requirements
Candidates who have or who will soon obtain a Master's degree or diploma in bioinformatics, scientific computing, mathematics, physics, computer science, or biology are eligible to apply for the PhD Program. Students with a degree in mathematics, computer science and physics are expected to have the relevant biological background, whereas students with a degree in biology are expected to show profound knowledge in mathematics and computer science.

Students with a Bachelor degree who have the necessary background in Bioinformatics or Scientific Computing can apply for a 2-semester grant for the Preparatory Program.

Prior to registering and applying online, you have to prepare the following documents in PDF formats:

  • Your CV / biographical data
  • Official academic transscript / record of study and certificates of relevant examinations
  • A research proposal (two pages) (see also the FAQ page)
  • One reference letter of an academic teacher who is able to evaluate your personality and academic experience. The reference letter shall include the name and the adress (postal, e-mail), the phone number and the academic position of the referee.
Optionally, you may provide a proof of proficiency in English and/or a Graduate Record Examination (GRE/GPA/TOEFL, see also http://www.gre.org and http://www.toefl.org).

Frequently asked questions
We summarized some of the student's inquiries and our answers regarding the graduate programs and the application procedure. Look at the FAQ page.

Online application
Successful online registration is confirmed by e-mail. This mail contains a registration number.
Note, that you have to provide two phone numbers of academic teachers in the registration form. They should be willing to orally provide academic and/or work-related references. Possibly we will call them.

All submitted documents must be in English or in German and in pdf-format.

Certified copies of documents are not mandatory at the time of submission. All relevant documents (e.g. diploma, transcripts), however, should be certified upon acceptance to the program. This can be done, for example, by the dean's or registrar's office of your university, a German embassy or consulate, a branch of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), a Goethe Institute or a public notary.

Filled form data and submitted documents are transferred by ssl-encryption and treated confidentially. Filling and submitting the form requires to accept the certificate at s-lotus.gwdg.de.

Please apply and either for the PhD Program or for the Preparatory Program. Do not apply for both programs.. Your application will be evaluated and eventually be considered for both programs.
