● How to get to the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center (HEMC) (Chinese: 广州大学城)

The Sun Yatsen University and the Dongyuan Hotel are located in the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center.

Brief introduction to the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center

Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center is an area featured by universities, located in Xiaoguwei Island (Chinese: 小谷围岛) in Xinzao Town (Chinese: 新造镇), Panyu District, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. With an area of approximately 43.3 km’s ride² and 3.53 millions square meters of indoor space, it is capable of accommodating 350 to 400 thousand people.

At the moment, a total of 10 higher education institutions including Sun Yat-sen University, South China University Of Technology, South China Normal University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Xinghai Conservatory of Music and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts have set up their campuses in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center with a total of around 120,000 students. It is aiming to gradually realize the integration between major and minor, interschool course selection and mutual credits recognition.

During the process of development, Xiaoguwei Island has preserved 4 local villages including Beigang, Shuishi, Nanting and Beiting in order to protect its historical and cultural heritage, which will be integrated with HEMC for common development after reasonable remolding in line with its master plan.

There are some places of historic interest and scenic beauty in or nearby the HEMC, such as the Tower Camps of Huangpu Military Academy significant in Chinese Modern History, Lingnan Impression Park and others, the HEMC Museum, which are ideal places for you to visit.

Transportation

◇By car/taxi: The island can be accessed through the toll Nansha Port Expressway (Chinese: 南沙港快速路) from the city, which links the island to Haizhu District to the north and Panyu District to the south. A temporary bridge connects the island to the southeast part of Haizhu district near the Yingzhou Ecological Park. In addition, a newly opened two-section cross-river tunnel (Chinese: 官洲隧道) now provides alternative free access to the island, linking it to the planned Biological Island to the north and Luntou area in Haizhu District.

◇By metro(MTR): Two Guangzhou Metro stations are located on the island. The Higher Education Mega Center North Station (Chinese: 大学城北站) and Higher Education Mega Center South Station (Chinese: 大学城南站) on Line 4 provide quick access to Guangzhou's convenient metro system.

◇By bus: The island is also served by a dozen of bus routes, with buses mainly running from and to the city centre of Guangzhou. Generally there are two types of bus service: Regular buses, operating similar to buses in the city, stops frequently and therefore it takes longer to ride, while commuter express buses dedicated to serve the university town utilize mainly expressways and have less stops. These express buses mostly terminate at the old campuses of respective universities on the island.
