demain des l'aube by Victor Hugo
Demain

Along the sea-beaten rock

My daughter was heard to complain

Loud and frequentalas! were her sight.

The father’s assistance was vain!

I stood on the shore all the night

And by the pale moon saw her plain

All the night heard her heartrending cries

Though loud was the wind hard the rain.

Before the bright morning appeared

Her voiceweak and falteringAlas!

Died away like the soft evening breeze

That passes the rock’s slender grass.

Exhausted with grief she expired

And left theepoor ArminAlone!

Now lost is thy strength in the war

The pride among women in gone!

When storms from the mountain burst forth

On high when the pillows they raise

I sit by the sad sounding shore

On the rockfatal rockthen I gaze.

Whenever the moons setting. I see

The shades of my dear children walk.

They seen half concealed from nay view

And sadly together they talk!

“In pity will none of you speak?”

Not heeding their father they go

I’m sadvery sadI’m indeed

For great is the cause of my woe!

Why dost thou awake me0 gale?

"I'm covered with dew-drops."it says

But the time of my fading is near.

The blast which my foliage decays.

Tomorrow the traveller shall come

Who once saw me comely and bold.

His eyes shall the meadow search round

But me they shall never behold.

Lieb Knabe, bist mein!

Ich locke den Schäfer,

Ich zieh ihn herein.

Da grünet kein Reis;

With kine and horsesKumus! we proceed

By reasonable rulesand choose a breed

For profit and increase at any price

Of a sound stockwithout defect or vice.

Butin the daily matches that we make

The price is everything for money’s sake

Men marry women are in marriage given

The churl or ruffianthat in wealth has thriven

May match his offspring with the proudest race

Thus everything is mix’dnoble and base!

If then in outward mannerformand mind

You find us a degradedmotley kind

Wonder no moremy friend! the cause is plain

And to lament the consequence is vain.

(The Works of J. Hookham Frerevol. ii.1872p. 334.)
