Antifungal Activity: Conjugated Polymers for Light-Activated Antifungal Activity

The recent emergence of antibioticresistant micro-organisms has been a public-health problem world wide. A cationic polythiophene–porphyrin dyad (PTP) is shown to exhibit efficient lightactivated antifungal activity. The positive charges and amphiphilic structure of PTP encourage its adsorption to the fungus cell surface based on electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Higher efficiency in singlet oxygen (1O2) generation can be attained from PTP upon photoexcitation due to the light-harvesting properties of the polymer backbone and efficient energy transfer from the polythiophene backbone to the porphyrin units. PTP can be used for treating fungal infections at low doses of irradiation light and polymer concentration.

TCO-Free, Flexible, and Bifacial Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Based on Low-Cost Metal Wires

A TCO-free, flexible and bifacial dye-sensitized solar cell is reportedby D. C. Zou and co-workers. Different from traditional sandwich-type structures, this solar cell is made from an alternative arrangement of fiber sub-strates as the working and counter electrodes. Such a unique solar cell has good flexibility without expensive transparent conductive oxide (TCO), as well as the ability to capture light to generate electricity from either side. The new structure also provides new clues for how to reduce the cost of solar cells and promote their application.

Inspired from natural nacre a transparent, layered nanocomposite hydrogel was fabricated from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and clay. This hydrogel shows excellent mechanical properties and a hierarchical microstructure. In their Communication on page 4676 ff., Q. Cheng et al. introduce a concept for the preparation of wet-chemical high-performance materials that can be used for applications, such as tissue-engineering, sensors, artificial muscles, and underwater antifouling materials.

Unlocking the endosome allows the release of siRNAs into the cytoplasm following the cellular uptake of nanoparticles made up of siRNAs and polyspermine imidazole-4,5-imine. In their Communication on page 7938 ff., T. Jin and co-workers show that a polymer of spermine with a pH-sensitive linkage degrades, upon entry into the endosome, into spermine and a nontoxic metabolite. Assays in cells and mice showed effective gene silencing by the polymer-packaged siRNAs without cytotoxicity.

Layered Composites: Bioinspired Layered Composites Based on Flattened Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

The cover illustrates a bioinspired strategy for fabricating layered composites based on flattened double-walled carbon nanotubes (FDWCNTs), as described by Q. F. Cheng, Z. Y. Tang, and co-workers on page 1838. The 2D feature of FDWCNTs facilitates formation of composites with a layered hierarchical micro-/nanostructure, which dramatically improves FDWCNT loading and results in good mechanical properties. This novel route is an important improvement towards achieving high-perform-ance CNT-reinforced polymer composites.
