对于普赖斯认为“科学学，就是科学计量学”的描述常见于国内外的相关论文和著作中，然而这一提法并不全面。在普赖斯1986年出版的《小科学，大科学及其他》中收录了Price’ S Citation Classic，其中有下面一段文字：“Those two fields seemed to react almost alchemically with my ofbeat development of quantitative methods in what was to become science of science or scientometrics. my book was accepted as one of the prime sources for the techniques and results。” Péter Vinkler（2010）在其专著中将普赖斯的这种认识表述为：“Scientometrics may belong to the discipline of ‘the science of science’ (Bernal, 1939; Price, 1963; Merton, 1973)”即科学计量学属于科学学的分支学科。
