检索1998-2008年Web of Science的SCI数据库分析得到2710篇地球科学领域高被引论文，被引用700次以上有11篇论文，分别刊登在9种期刊上，其中RADIOCARBON《放射性碳》2篇、BULLETIN OF THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY《美国气象学会通报》2篇、NATURE《自然》1篇、SCIENCE《科学》1篇、GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH LETTERS《地球物理学研究快报》1篇、JOURNAL OF METAMORPHIC GEOLOGY《变质地质学杂志》1篇、REMOTE SENSING OF ENVIRONMENT《环境遥感》1篇、APPLIED CLAY SCIENCE《应用粘土科学》1篇、APPLIED GEOCHEMISTRY《应用地球化学》1篇，第5、8、11篇为综述论文，第1、3、4、6、7、8、9、10篇为高被引作者论文。

11篇被引700次以上地球科学领域高被引论文，目前仍旧是热点课题，2008年这些论文最少被引用100次以上，其中第9篇论文2008年被引351次。
