A Letter to the High School Graduatesfor PVRS Career Day

Ladies, Gentlement and Friends:

I am honored and grateful for the invitationby Ms. Shannon Doran to give me this opportunity to share stories of my companywith you.

I hope it will be of use for your career development in the future, because I feel that it is my obligation to give something to our community that could make us stronger and better as a whole.

I have been pondering how to tell our young community something which you may appreciate, remember and most importantly, provide you with knowledge which will aide you in obtaining the key to success of the jobmarket.

After much thought, I have decided to tell you a story today that is about one of my employees who has been working for my company in Amherst for overthree years now.

Her name is Kella Wise… oh wait, that should be Kella Cote now, since she just got married last year.

There are 3 characteristics about Kella that allow her to have a special position in the company as well as in my heart. The3-words are: ‘dependability’, ‘gratitude’ and ’love’.

First,‘dependability’.

Here are some examples of what ‘dependability’means in a workplace.

I never have to tell Kella what she has to domore than once, whether it is something I’d like her to do by herself orsomething I’d like her to remind me of.

If she doesn’t know how to do the job which I have assigned to her, she knows when, how and what to ask in order to accomplishit.

Whenever people come into the office, Kella’sdesk is as clean and organized as a surgeon’s table.

She is always a fewminutes earlier than the office hours to prepare herself for the potentialphone calls coming at 8 o’clock sharp, when we open for business.

At the sametime, she is always the last person to leave the office, checking that all thewindows are closed and doors locked, which may mean she leaves a few minutespast the hour.

For new high school grads like you: if you can get to school everyday on time, never missing a homework assignment or aproject due date, I believe you have the potential to be dependable like Kella.

Second,‘gratitude’.

Kella started in a part·time position in my company with minimum pay because we were not sure by then if she, with abachelor degree in math, would be a fit to our biotech company.

To our surprise, she took this job veryseriously, more seriously than her counterparts, who we previously offered thesame position in the company.

“I really appreciate the opportunity you gaveme to work for YoungerUSA.” Kella wrote in her first year Annual Work Report, “Iam grateful to all the training I’ve received, the new skills I’ve been taughtand the new knowledge that I have learned from other people in the company.”

Every time that Kella has gotten a raise, apromotion, or a reward, Kella is always, apart from really happy, extremelygrateful. The result is a win-win scenario.

My company is willing to put more investments into her, and over time, Kella has become a full-time employee, asupervisor and a wife.

Third,‘love’.

Since we hired Kella, she has been absorbing knowledge that is new to her as a bone-dry sponge absorbs water. As I mentioned earlier, her major is not Biology.

However, merely a few years after she beganworking for me she can not only read the most advanced scientific papers, butalso present them beautifully as a professional on YouTube.

She just LOVES what she is doing, which enables her to become better and better everyday.

Kella has two dogs and what might seem alittle odd, is that she seems to love one more than other. His name is ‘Koko.’To understand this, you have to understand how Kella adopted Koko in the firstplace.

You see, Kella had been hired by my company for only a little over two weeks.

One day she went out for her lunch break but didn’t come back to the office when she was supposed to even though there was work waiting for her in the office.

When I called her asking why, she said that she had to bring home a dog she just adopted. I was very mad as you can imagine and I was ready to fire her.

Of course, as you can tell from my priorpoints, Kella didn’t get fired.

It turned out that Koko was about to bebrought to an animal shelter, and Kella couldn’t help herself from saving Koko. Kella taking the dog while she wassupposed to be at work, both angered me and softened my heart.

So far, Kella’s only warning from the companywas for not being able to set her priorities straight during this incident.Coincidentally, it is the same event that won the heart of her boss for herpassion and love.

So, my young fellows,  ‘Dependability’,’ Gratitude’ and ‘Love’ have helped Kella find her foothold in the job market…  do you have any of these great qualities?
