The name of my hometown village is Damao Hudong, a place where there are two salient characters: poor and blue. The poor sense has been pertained to the people and the view of the sky has been remaining the blue. The scenery of my hometown village in summer can compete with any place in the world. The boundless stretch of field is artlessly colored bysix colors of emblements : the light green of wheat , the blackish green of naked oats , the silvery white of buckwheat , the golden yellow of rapeseed , the offwhite of potato and the red of green manured land . When you look around the field, you will feel as if you stand in a natural colorphalanx. If you watch at the same location next year, the scenery of the field still looks like color squares, butthe color of the location changes, because the land should be cultivated by turns. The alternate cultivation of the plowland causes the permutation of the field’s colors, and the periods of the permutation is a mathematics problem. Itis very important that I found such question of mathematics in my hometown village during my childhood’s hard farming, which introduces me into mathematics’ kingdom. Itis like a ship far out at sea whose mast-head can already be seen from theshore; it is like the morning sun in the east whose shimmering rays are visiblefrom a high mountain top; it is like a child about to be born moving restlesslyin its mother's womb.
Why has a 102 year old ecologist been asked to vacate his university office? David W. Goodall is an Australian ecologist with an outstandingly long career – he received his PhD 75 years ago! Over that period he has produced some seminal works in the field of vegetation analysis, and acted as Editor-in-Chief of the 36 volume, highly influential Ecosystems of the World series. Until recently David had been allocated office space at Edith Cowan University in Perth, and commuted into campus by bus and train at least four days a week. As reported in the Australian media , however, David has now been asked to give up his office and only come on to campus, accompanied, for pre-arranged meetings. The university claims that it made the decision in David’s own interest, but his own daughter (who surely knows him and his capabilities better than the university authorities) says it’s the “the worst thing … … could possibly do, I don’t know if he would survive it”. I really hope Edith Cowan University reconsiders this, it seems a very shabby way to treat a distinguished researcher with such a long working history. David Goodall, 102yo scientist, told to leave Edith Cowan University post By Charlotte Hamlyn Updated Sun at 9:10am PHOTO: David Goodall has been working at Edith Cowan University for al most two decades and now he has been told to leave. (ABC News: Charlotte Hamlyn) RELATED STORY: West Australians honoured in Australia Day awards MAP: Perth 6000 At 102, David Goodall is Australia's oldest working scientist. He's had a career in ecology spanning 70 years, producing more than 100 research papers, earning three doctorates and receiving a member of the Order of Australia for his contribution to the field. His work has taken him around the world, but these days you will find him at his office at Edith Cowan University. He still goes to the Joondalup campus at least four days a week, making the 90-minute commute that involves catching two buses and a train. Media player: Space to play, M to mute, left and right to seek. VIDEO: David Goodall is also a keen theatre actor (ABC News) I have no social contact in the building where my flat is and few social contacts elsewhere in Perth actually, Dr Goodall said. But I know most of the people in my office corridor and it's very nice to be able to go and talk to them from time to time even though they may be pretty busy. He has served as an honorary research associate at the university for almost two decades. But now he has been told to pack up his office, with the university declaring him unfit to be on campus. The Dean of the School of Sciences, Andrew Woodward, said the decision was made after numerous concerns were raised by staff and students about Dr Goodall's safety and wellbeing. This is not an easy thing for anybody, he said. This is not a decision we've taken lightly, this is something that has been considered over a period of time. We are now of the opinion where the situation is at a point where we really do need to make this change in David's best interest and our own. It's another blow for the botanist who was forced to give up his second love, theatre, a few years ago when his failing eyesight prevented him from driving to rehearsals. Off campus time PHOTO: While the university said Prof Goodall could work from home, he has no room for an office. (ABC News: Charlotte Hamlyn) From next year Dr Goodall will only be permitted on campus for prearranged meetings and will have to be accompanied. His daughter, Karen Goodall-Smith, said that would have a dramatic impact on his sense of independence and mental wellbeing. She expressed her sentiments to the university when it contacted her earlier this year to ask for her input. I said it would be the worst thing you could possibly do, I don't know if he would survive it, she said. After everything he has contributed, for them to do that, I'm appalled. Edith Cowan University said it wanted to continue its relationship with Dr Goodall and had just renewed his honorary professor position for a further three years. However, it said he would have to work from a home office. We're going to be providing a computer, a printer, Mr Woodward said. When he needs to come or he would like to come on campus for meetings or to interact with other staff and students he won't bear any cost for that, we'll arrange that transport for him. Dr Goodall said he does not have room for a home office in his one bedroom unit and he was looking for an alternative space. I would be glad if they did reconsider it, he said. But I don't feel that I'm in a position to press it. He said he was eager to continue to contribute to the university, even from afar.
April 10, 2012 in Leadership , Success with 21 Comments By Mike Myatt , Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth What would you do if you didn’t need to work? Golf, travel, volunteer, spend time with family and friends, teach, go into politics – the list of options are virtually endless. A friend of mine called me today, told me the sale of his business had closed, and then informed me he had enough money to never need to work again. He told me he was calling to ask what I would do if I didn’t have to work again. I was impressed with his logical pursuit of advice and counsel, but wasn’t at all surprised that he was searching for a bit of direction. While many entrepreneurs tirelessly seek their exit by disposition, few have spent a great deal of time planning what life after work looks like. In today’s post I’ll ask a few questions and share a few thoughts with the goal of causing you to think about what defines you. I want to begin today’s post with an excerpt from my book “ Leadership Matters…The CEO Survival Manual :“ “By the time you reach the CEO level you should be striving to move beyond success and towards significance. You need to use your network, your wealth, your experience and intellect, as well as your passion to create a legacy that transcends your title. Having the advantage of hindsight, I can say with great certainty that who you are a a person is infinitely more important than the job you hold. There are few things in life as thought provoking as witnessing what by all outward appearances seems to be a successful executive, but as you begin to peel back the layers of their carefully crafted veneer you quickly come to realize they are little more than an empty, bitter, and frustrated person. They work their entire career chasing some illusive form of fulfillment only to fade into the sunset with nothing more than an empty lifetime of regrets as their reward.” While my friend is the farthest thing from the illustration provided in the aforementioned quote, I have seen far too many people fall into this category. My hope in authoring this piece is to have you adjust your thinking when it comes to the definition of success. My clients usually tend to be successful individuals prior to finding me. My goal is to simply help them leverage their success into significance over the course of our dealings. The sad reality is that far too many people either confuse success with significance, or they are so focused on success that they are actually blind to the meaning of significance. Just take a look around and you’ll see that most people use their knowledge, resources, and experience to acquire things in an attempt to satisfy their personal desires, which in their minds constitutes success. Contrast this with the people that use their knowledge, resources, and experience to serve and benefit others, which by my standards constitutes significance. Sure, for those “who get it” success and significance are one in the same, but for most professionals success begins and ends with the achievement of a certain list of personal goals with little regard to the impact on others. These people confuse success with significance, and regardless of their wealth and professional accomplishments, they fail to accomplish the true greatness that only comes through making significant contributions to something other than one’s self. I don’t care how your resume reads, what your net worth is, or what your W-2 shows – what’s important is your underlying motivation as evidenced by what you do with what you have. I am always impressed by those who choose a life of service over personal glory, or those who understand how to leverage their personal success into significance. While most of my clients have acquired significant material possessions, they just don’t live their lives according to a “he or she who has the most toys wins” philosophy. They don’t give because their accountant told them to, or solely for estate planning purposes, they give to make a difference. They don’t throw trivial contributions to a variety of charities to see their name appear on donor’s lists, they make substantial contributions (usually with little if any self-promotion). It all boils down to motivation – are you only pursuing fun, fame, fortune, and recognition, or are you seeking to serve and benefit others with what you have? It is my opinion that when you start to define your personal success by the value you add to the lives of others you have arrived as a mature human being who possesses true influence and has become a person of significance. My challenge to you is this – set the chinning bar very high for yourself by reevaluating your goals and objectives to ensure you are on a path towards significance. Don’t allow yourself to become blinded by your success, rather leverage your success in an attempt to make a lasting and significant legacy for which you and your family can be proud. So, what would you do if you never had to work again? What defines you? C ‘mon you know you’ve thought about it – share your thoughts in the comments below
PhD is a journey
There is no labor a person does that is undignified; if they do it right.
Dear Professor Yu Each year the science team of CSIRO’s Office of the Chief Executive funds a small number of symposia on cutting-edge science. The aim of the symposia is to increase the level of scientific discussion across CSIRO, collaborations with universities and interactions with top international experts in new and frontier areas of science. This year our proposal on “Water and carbon coupling at regional scales: key issues and a new approach” was successful. Several distinguished scientists in the field, including Dr Chris Milly and Professor Gaby Katul (USA) and Dr Ray Leuning, have accepted our invitations to give keynote presentations. The symposium will be held at the CSIRO Discovery Centre, Canberra over two days (25 to 26 th June 2012). A number of presentations will be given during the first day and small-group discussions will take place on the second day. The number of participants will be kept quite small (35) to encourage good interactions among all participants. Dr Ray Leuning will formally retire from CSIRO on 30 th June 2012 after a brilliant career over 33 years with four CSIRO divisions; we hope that all participants will join us to celebrate his significant contribution to the field during the symposium. We would like to invite you to attend the symposium and, if you would like, to give a short presentation (about 15 minutes). We would be most grateful if you can reply to us by email within the next two week, including the title of your presentation. We are discussing with a publisher about a special journal issue. If we are successful, you will be invited to submit a paper to the special issue within two months after the symposium. We will pay for all your travel expenses, accommodation and food costs for attending the symposium. You will be contacted for travel arrangements after you accept our invitation. Please RSVP to Louisa Kung ( Louisa.kung@csiro.au ) or contact me ( Yingping.wang@csiro.au or 03 9239 4577) for further information about the symposium. We hope that you will join us to this exciting symposium and celebration of Ray’s achievement with his former colleagues, friends and their families. We look forward to seeing you then. Yours Sincerely XXXXXXXX
Modern Trends in Basic and Applied Laser Spectroscopy,所涉及的内容都是Prof. 有2005年Nobel Prize in physics的获得者Theodor W. Hnsch,介绍了laser frequency comb。 My wishes: That science and technology always should have the purpose to shape a better world.(By Sune)
