Thus our approach at the Institute is to focus research on biological systems as a whole, rather than pursue the traditional approach of focusing on individual genes, proteins, or parts of an organism. Scientists at the Institute conduct considerable research on model organisms (bacteria, yeast, sea urchins, fish, and mice), as well as on humans. Model organisms can be easily perturbed -- genetically, biologically, or environmentally. The impact of such perturbations on the functioning of particular systems in the organism helps us understand the interrelations and roles of the component parts of organism, and the overall organism. Studying biological systems of model organisms is critical to our understanding of how these same systems function in humans. What is truly unique about the Institute is our interactive and integrative research. Scientists from multiple disciplines (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, etc.) work closely together to fully understand all aspects of the inherently complex systems intrinsic to living organisms. Such in-depth understanding is ultimately essential to realizing our goal of predictive, preventive, personalized medicine. Leroy Hood教授,人类基因组计划最早的倡导者之一,国际系统生物学创始人,美国系统生物学研究所所长。Leroy Hood教授不到四十岁就成为美国科学院院士,在加州理工学院工作期间,他发明了DNA合成仪、DNA测序仪、蛋白质合成仪和蛋白质测序仪,并成功实现了产业化,对世界生命科学研究和产业发展产生了深远的影响。1992年,微软总裁Bill Gates给西雅图华盛顿大学捐赠巨资设立了分子生物技术系,Lee Hood教授成为Bill Gates冠名教授和首任Bill Gates冠名系主任。2000年,Leroy Hood教授在西雅图创办了系统生物学研究所,倡导在生物医学领域采用系统方法,并取得了国际同行瞩目的成就,以此引领着国际生物医学的发展方向。
