很多人有个误解，认为只要托福、GRE考好了就行了。其实不是这么回事。当你的飞机降落在美国那块土地上的时候，你有没有机会在美国生存、发展下去，关键是要看你有没有机会去表达自己，和别人交流。如果你学的是哑巴英语，到了美国你将暗无天日。而我们目前的大学英语的教育是有缺陷的。现存的各个大学的英语角就我个人认为，也是有问题的，虽然大家都很有热情，往往谈到半夜12点。由于大家都是同胞，彼此能相互理解各自的中国英语，你点头，我也点头。但一碰到一个 native american （地道的美国人） 时，交流同样的东西，就听不懂对方在说什么了。其实我们学一种语言，最重要的就是利用这种语言的某些部分来进行交流。 communication is our purpose （交流是目的），而不是语言本身。 我们的英语教育就是恨不得把语言的大海完全笼罩在自己的怀抱里。其实知识是无涯的。我们往往把英语仅仅当作一门知识在学，从小学到大学，到最后，还是不会说英语。为什么我们花了十几年、二十年的时间学了一大堆我们在实际生活中根本永不上的东西。我们究竟应该用什么方法能使我们在最短的时间内掌握英语的交流呢？语言的交流与掌握大量的词汇、句型、语法是两回事。 其实，就语言本身的知识来说，我们已经过关了，而且我们所学的英语知识全是标准的英语。我们缺少的就是在交流中来运用英语，只有在交流中我们才能与对方进行思维密码的相互破译。同样的话在不同的语言交流环境中所表达的意思是不一样的。要想真正领悟对方的意思，必须与对方进行心与心的交流。作为一个中国学生，如果不根本改变自己的思维结构，从而迎合美国人的思维结构和习惯，依然保持自己中国式的思维习惯，那么他学的英语就毫无价值。那么我们该怎么办呢？我建议要把我们学习的目标收缩，把追求大而广的英语知识转化为追求一种定量性的技巧，我认为有六种技巧，是美国人和美国人之间交流的关键性东西，如果我们能掌握这六种技巧，就可以更好地理解美国人的思维，从而学好口语。 第一，如何用英文简单界定一个东西的技巧。 美国人和美国人交谈80％是想告诉对方 what is a book 。我们中国人从小学到大学的课本尽管词汇难度不断加深，但思维逻辑结构却只停留在一个水平上。中国人常说 Where is the book? 很少有人说 What is a book? 而美国的小学生就开始问： What is the book? 这种 Where is the book? 只是描述阶段，连哑巴也能做到。但是我想连大学生也很难回答 What is a book? 因为中国传统英语教学模式没有教会学生表达思想的技巧。 第二，如果已经学会界定，但理解还有偏差，那就要训练 how to explain things in different ways. 一种表达方式对方不懂，美国人会寻找另一种表达方式最终让对方明白。因为事物就一个，但表达它的语言符号可能会很多。比如水，世界上就这一个事物，但却有多种符号来表达它。如果一个人懂8种语言，那他在世界上被别人理解的机会就会大得多。用汉语说"水"别人不懂，用德语说别人也不懂，但用英语说 water， 别人可能就懂了。这就要多做替换练习。传统的教学方法也做替换练习，但这种替换不是真替换，只是语言层面的替换，而不是思维层面的替换。比如， I love you, 按中国的替换方法就把 you 换成 her,my mother,them 等，这种替换和小学生练描红没有什么区别。这种替换没有对智力构成挑战，没有启动思维。换到最后也不知道到底在 love 谁，现实生活中也不能这么随便 love （笑声）。这种替换句子的基本结构没变，我听不懂 I love you, 肯定也听不懂 I love her 。如果替换为 I want to kiss you.I want to hug you.I've a crush on you.I will show my heart to you 等，或者给对方讲电影《泰坦尼克》，告诉对方 that is love， 这样一来对方可能就明白了。这才叫真正的替换。 也就是说用一种不同的方式表达同一个意思，或者对方听不清楚，举一个简单易懂的例子来表达，直到对方明白。 第三，我们必须学会美国人怎样描述东西。 从描述上来讲，由于中美的文化不同会产生很大的差异。我们描述东西无外乎把它放在时间和空间两个坐标上去描述。但美国人对空间的描述总是由我及外，由里及表。而中国人正好相反。美国人说"我向雪山走去"，中国人就会说"我从雪山走来"。时间上来说，中国人是按自然的时间顺序来描述。我们描述一个东西突然停住时，住往最后说的那个地方是最重要的。我们听评书常说，欲知后事好何，请听下回分解，中国人很认可这种压轴戏、抖包袱式的方式，而美国人听到这里可能会把收音机砸了：我听的就是 what happened, 但发生了什么我不知道，还要让我下回再听（笑声），岂有此理！因为美国人在时间上描述时先把最重要的东西说出来，然后再说陪衬的东西。只有发生悲剧性的事件，美国人才在前面加上铺垫。这就是中国人和美国人在时间描述上的巨大差别。 第四，要学会使用重要的美国习语。 因为任何语言除了标准化的东西以外，不容易学、易造成理解困惑的东西就是"习语"。比如北京人说“盖了帽了”，老外永远也理解不了，这就是习语。所以和美国人交流时，能适当地运用美国习语，他马上就会觉得很亲切，也很爱和你交流。那么什么是习语，我认为就是每个单词你都认识，但把它们组合在一起，你就不知道是什么意思了。 第五，学会两种语言的传译能力。 这是衡量口语水平的一个最重要标准。因为英语不是我们的母语，我们天生就有自己的母语。很多人都想学好外语必须丢掉自己的母语，这是不对的。因为我就是一个例子，我不仅汉语没有说得越来越糟，而且英语也没有说得越来越糟。 第六，要有猜测能力。 为什么美国人和美国人、中国人和中国人之间交流很少产生岐义？就是因为他们之间能"猜测"。我们的教学不提倡"猜测"。但我觉得猜测对学好美国口语很重要。在交流中，有一个词你没有听懂，你不可能马上去查字典，这时候就需要猜测来架起一座桥梁来弥补这个缺口，否则交流就会中断。 中国人学习口语讲究背诵，背句型、背语调，这样导致的结果就是很多人讲口语的时候讲着讲着眼就开始向上翻（笑声），实际上是在记忆中寻找曾经背过的东西。如果他要是能猜测的话，我想也就不会出现这种现象。 以上就是我所说的学会用美国人思维的六个技巧。中国学生如果能做到这六点，用很短的时间肯定能学好口语。 再说说英语语音的问题吧。我们中国人不需要钻牛角尖，一定追求发音象一个native(本地人)，只要我们的发音不至于让对方产生误解，其实就可以了。我们在平时，不需要迷信什么科学方法，只需要记住一点：模仿。但一定要模仿标准的英语或美语。在模仿的基础上，每天，我们每天保持1个小时的自我口语练习，这个练习必须假想一个双向交流的场合，即仿佛有人与你交流一样。 最后，讲讲英语的用气问题。我们在发音时，尽量气运丹田，而避免用肺发音，这样的结果将使得你的英语发音洪亮圆润。

我规定自己每天至少要做一件有意义的事，今天是和小女儿伊嘉一起上英语课。伊嘉上小学时学过英语口语，通过了“三一口语”七级，九级虽然没过，有原因，从水平来说，公认比其他通过的考生不差。（三一口语是英国剑桥大学三一学院与中国官方合作的一个英语口语评级标准，北京一些英语补习学校的广告上，常有“本校老师大多具有三一口语九级证书”的字样，以为招徕）为了让她英语口语不退步，这个学期，她妈妈办了一个口语班。这个班每周日上三个小时课，来自苏格兰的留学生Peter当老师，六个正式学生，家长可以旁听。旁听的家长一般有两个，连我在内。除了外出开会等特殊原因，我坚持旁听这个课程，我习惯睡一会儿午觉，这个班是下午的课，所以一般少听一个小时。今天改为上午的课，就三个小时全上了。 这个班用的教材是《剑桥国际英语教程》第三版=Interchange(Third Edition），这是版权页的正式标注。这本书每课有一个主题，今天讲第七课The world we live in(我不会用斜体字，先加个单引号吧)主题是环境保护（包括污染及其对策）。伊嘉的英语口语比同学们要高许多（大概相当于外语大学英语专业三年级的水平，Peter甚至说她比央视四套的主播们不差，我觉得这个判断中有点太偏重语音），性情又像我，好动，所以听课时会有懒散的时候。严重时，我会轻轻哼一声，作为提醒，今天只哼了一次。 Peter真是个好老师，有水平，又十分敬业。他讲课能紧紧扣住教材，同时还提供给学生不少相关知识。他讲语法不像中国老师，多用案例，不大讲特讲理论，但理论尽在其中。每次上课，必上满点甚至满分，课时从不缺斤短两。讲课时，精神抖擞，生动有趣，差不多可以赶上我了。 Peter是全英语教学，不说一句中国话，我上课不预习，所以，开始时往往有听不太懂的地方，上半堂以后就好多了。上课时，我一边听，一边查课本的生词表，比较生的词汇或词组，我会抄一两遍，以加深印象。抄写到political unrest的时候，看到中文解释是“政治动乱”，我想到往事，心有所动。猜想网管会不会因为这个敏感词将本文放入回收站，不觉有悲凉之感。

上周五，为去照毕业信息采集照片，去了一趟上海，回来的时候坐了从上海开往南京的列车。上车后发现旁边坐着一个金发碧眼的洋鬼子妹妹。看样子很年轻，但是手上的戒指让我猜测应该是二十多岁多岁（忘了从哪儿约么记得白种人容颜老得比东方人要快，所以就排除有三十多岁的可能，手上的戒指又让我觉得她只有十几岁的概率很小）。刚开始我有种想跟她打个招呼的冲动，转念又觉得不能跟她打招呼，这样显得这些鬼子在中国都是受人追捧瞻仰的感觉，自己也成为了助涨洋鬼子在中国享受特等公民待遇的推手，所以就打消了这个念头。把头一直扭向窗外，看那江南一路“人工的文明”。 心中任然在暗自捣鼓，应该跟她聊聊天，检验检验自己英语口语水平到底退步了多少。恍惚中自从不想入那个大同教而没再见那个英国人后就再没开口说英语了，不知不觉该有两年多了吧，那个蛮夷之语不知还会不会讲。跟这个鬼子小妹妹聊聊也许还能温故一下口语呢。偶尔间又听见她跟隔着过道的一个中国小妹妹（看人种当然是东亚的，听发音不会是小日本或者韩国的，那就是中国几率最大了，况且那打扮也觉得套上“中国特色”比较合情合理），我听出来感觉不是在母语为英语体系的地区长大的人。又听见他跟隔着这个中国小妹妹跟她同伴谈话用的不是英语，是德文？法文？丹麦语？西班牙语？无从得知，只能凭着感觉觉得是欧洲人用的鸟语。于是乎也就为自己找到一个更好的理由“不是英语语系长大的，英语也不纯正，跟她练习口语也不一定有多大益处，不理她正好表明不是所有人看他们都仿佛下等人看上等人那样....”隐隐约约中似乎听到她说了一句“May be i'll have a nap" 就再也没有下文。 我任然望着窗外，偶尔扭头留意一下旁边动静，就这样广播开始播报无锡站快到了，看来高铁是没有白花纳税人的钱，的确挺快的，30多分钟从上海到无锡的旅途就结束了，我起身发现这个洋鬼子小妹妹正在“have a nap”，那神情很恬静，而且早些时候没有仔细观察，这张西方的脸还挺美的，而且身材也不错，应该也算得上个尤物吧。我带着些许懊悔，提醒她为我让让路，打搅完她的美梦，在无锡下了车。 2011年4月10 无锡

IDW虽然是一个国际会议，但主要是由日本的信息显示学会(SID,Society for Information Display)牵头的一个专业会议，所以每年的12月份在日本举行，参加人员也主要以日本国内科研院所和企业的科研人员和工程师为主，其次是来自韩国、中国台湾、欧美等地的学者。每年参加的人数一半在500人左右，今年由于受到金融危机的影响，参加人数也减少至300人左右。于是，荧光粉分会的会长 静冈大学的退休教授中西洋一郎先生 以发邮件形式和在11月28日的荧光粉同学会演讲会上呼吁大家积极参加，以应对今年参加人数的不足。 会议的主题都是围绕显示科学与技术，包括 LC Scienceand Technologies; Active Matrix Displays and Components; Plasma Displays; EL Displays and Phosphors; Field Emission Displays and CRT; Organic LED Displays; 3D/Hyper-Realistic Displays and Systems; Applied Vision and Human Factors; Projection and Large-Area Displays and their Components; Electronic Paper; MEMS for Future Displays and Related Electron Devices; Display Electronic Systems。另外还有两个主题分会：Display Technologies for Professional Use, Flexible Displays。所以参加的人员有一半左右来自企业，如日本的SONY, Toshiba, Panasonic, NHK, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Sharp, Toyota, Honda, 韩国的Samsung SDI, LG, 美国的REE Optical System, Miradia, Pixtronix，德国的Osram, Merck等单位。在会议安排的时候邀请报告大多来自企业，企业的报告往往更贴近实际应用，可以给研究人员以更大的启发，这也是该会议吸引人的地方。可是，有些日本企业的研发人员在做英文口头报告时感到为难，主要是在这方面的训练比较少，另外好多英语的发音在日本语中找不到。所以拿着讲稿讲的日本人不在少数，至少在荧光粉会场里有两个邀请报告都是在看着讲稿在数说的；而且有些发音和表达确实让人难以理解，此时听众们善意的笑声会响起，会议主持也会给报告人找个台阶下：这个问题可以在会议后再私下讨论。 其实来自Toshiba的Hiramatsu的英语还不错的，至少在下午作口头报告的时候都表达得很清楚。我是下午一部分发表会的会议主席，于是HIramatsu上午在墙报展示厅里找到我，问我是不是他那个部分的会议主持，我说是的。他当即表示很高兴，对我说，下午的提问可千万别问复杂的问题，说英语的时候要慢慢的。原来在11月28日的荧光粉同学会的晚宴上他听Uheda博士说我的问题都很尖刻。Uheda (上田恭太)是三菱化学从事氮化物荧光粉开发的关键人物，也是我从事氮化物荧光粉研究的启蒙老师之一，和我关系很好。去年的一个国际会议上被我问得很惨（他跟我说，他在酒店的房间里被同事训了1个多小时，就是因为英语差没法回答我的问题。后来我跟他说了对不起，他说不是我的缘故）。所以他就对Hiramatsu说最好事前跟我打个招呼，免得难堪。其实，我没有他们想象的那样严格和恐怖。 Hiramastu在每年的应用物理学会发表会上都和我打过照面，算是熟人了。 既然他跟我说了，我就应允了。在下午的发表会上，他作完报告后就有韩国的Porf. Sohn提了问题。Hiramatsu立刻就说，我的英语不好，请你慢慢说。顿时引来一片笑声。其实Sohn提的不是问题，而是针对他工作的一个评论，说Hiramatsu的报告帮他解决了能量转移计算时的建模问题。Hiramastu虚惊一场。后来是Prof. Yamamoto 提的问题，他也回答得不错。我在掌握时间的时候故意提前1分钟结束他的整个发表。当我按了铃声后，听见他小声地说了声：太好了！ 好可爱的Hiramatsu！ 第二天的会议里因为有关于FED的报告，我去听了一下。来自日本NORITAKE公司的Kurachi报告了CNT-FED的技术参数和特性，应该讲产品很有特点，消费电力低，电池驱动。他是看着讲稿作完报告的，这个时候有个欧美模样的听众问他，FED可不可以作为液晶背光源？Kurachi 让提问着重复问题了两遍，好像也没有听懂，在台上咿咿呀呀、哼哼哈哈地折腾了半天也没有说出个名堂。好在他的一位共同研究着回答了那个问题。这时我想起了5年前在日本横滨参加的一个国际会议，在一个学生讲完后我问了些问题，连着重复了3遍，那个学生也没搞懂（估计是太紧张的缘故）。于是他的老师帮他回答了问题。最后会议结束的时候，我听到他的老师用日语对另一位老师说：日本人的英语咋那么差呢？我当时就笑晕了。 其实日本人在说英语的时候是很认真的，他很努力地去表达自己的意思，很想让你听明白，有时会很可爱。IDW会议上就有一位日本人在表达的时候，一会儿说 I think, 一会儿又说 I do not think, 接着感觉不对，又说I think 如此反复了3次，让所有人都乐翻了。英语口语的熟练掌握的确是研究者需要的基本功之一，想到我刚和老外打交道的时候，什么都回复说 Thank you, 甚至在人家说How are you？的时候也是如此，让我夫人着实嘲弄过一番。我想只有通过多练习，多参加会议，跟人多交流，英语口语才能有切实的提高。
