2015 GU XIAOCHENG LECTURE 顾孝诚讲座 The 2015 GU XIAOCHENG LECTURE is shared by Dr. Liming Wang of Zhejiang University and Dr. Fuchou Tang of Peking University. The Gu Xiaocheng lecture award was established by the Gu Xiaocheng Memorial Fund in2012. The lectureship recognizes young investigators showing promises to become future leaders in life science research, especially those who work in China. Dr.Liming Wang received B.S. from Peking University in 2005, and his Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology in 2011. His graduate work with his mentor Professor David Anderson, on the regulation of social behaviors in fruit flies, laid the cornerstone of this field. After finishing his impressive doctoral training, Dr. Wang skipped postdoctoral training and set up his lab at the University of California, Berkeley as a Bowes Research Fellow and independent Principal Investigator.Dr.Wang joined the faculty at Life Sciences Institute (LSI), Zhejiang Universityas a Principal Investigator and tenure-track Professor in early 2014. LSI, founded in 2009 as an innovative “Special Academic Zone”. He was recruited through thenational “Young Thousand Talent Plan”. Dr.Wang and his colleagues started to investigate the regulation of organismal metabolism by the central nervous system. He introduced the concept of for aging (aka “food searching”) behavior in hungry flies, and identifying octopamine, the insect counter part of vertebrate norepinephrine, as the neural substrate underlying this behavior critical for food intake. He is recognized for his outstanding scientific instincts and also for the rare combination of independent thinking and collaborative spirit. He has made a number of breakthroughs as a young scientist. Dr. Wang also has a passion in educating the general public.His stories on leptin, cholesterol regulation and statin drugs, and gene therapy have gained him a very broad readership,especially among the younger generation. Dr.Fuchou Tang received his Ph.D. degree from Peking University in 2003 and did hispostdoc research at University of Cambridge, where he developed single cell microRNA profiling and single cell RNA-Seq transcriptome sequencing techniques,and worked on gene regulation mechanisms of mouse early embryonic development.He was recruited to BIOPIC (Biodynamics Optical Imaging Center), PekingUniversity, as an independent PI on 2010. Being the first to do single cell transcriptome analyses in China, he has established himself as an international leader to study the genetic and epigenetic regulation mechanisms of gene expression network in human early embryos and germ line cells. His work on gene expression dynamics of human pre-implantation embryos and embryonic stem cells (hESCs) by single-cell RNA-seq analysis is considered amilestone accomplishment. In collaboration with his colleagues, Dr. Tang showed that the MALBAC-based pre-implantation genomic screening (PGS) in in vitro fertilization (IVF) enable saccurate and cost-effective selection of viable fertilized eggs for embryo transfer. This is the first proof of principle report in the world to show that single cell genome sequencing technology can be used for PGS. Dr. Tang has made several game-changing contributions in the fields of single cell functional genomics and human developmental biology. He is one of the major driving forces in the exciting field of single cell genomics, and his work has brought revolutionary changes to medical practice, bringing new reality to families with genetic disorders.

The Gu Xiaocheng lecture will be presented in the annual Ray Wu Symposium series. Professor Gu Xiaocheng worked closely with Dr. Ray Wu in many aspects to promote scientific exchanges between China and the United States.This lectureship also commemorates the friendship between Dr. Ray Wu and Professor Gu Xiaocheng, and their shared legacy. Professor Gu Xiaocheng was a professor in the Schoolof Life Sciences, Peking University, China.When she was the head of the Department of Biology (currently the School ofLife Sciences), Professor Gu established the Life Science Center in Peking Universityand headed the State Key Laboratory of Protein Engineering and Plant Genetic Engineering. She also led the effort to establish the State Key Laboratory ofBiomembrane and Membrane Bioengineering, and the Center for Bioinformatics(CBI) in Peking University. CBI is the national node of EMBnet. In later years, Professor Gu helped in building the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) and the Center for Pharmaceutical Information and Engineering Research in Peking University. ProfessorGu Xiaocheng served as the chief coordinator representing China for the CUSBEA (China-United States Biology and Biochemistry Examinations and Applications) Program, in the 1980s which brought over 400 students from Chinato pursue Ph.D. degrees in the US,thus leading the way for Chinese students to study life sciences abroad and return to work in China.She organized a series of conferences that allowed CUSBEA students and others to continue their contacts. The2014 Gu Xiaocheng lecture is awarded to Dr. Guangshuo Ou of Tsinghua University. Dr. Guangshuo Ou received his Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology fromthe University of California, Davis,in 2006. His Ph.D. research was in Dr. Jon Scholey’s lab (2001-2006). Supportedby the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, Dr. Ou did his postdoctoralresearch with Dr. Ron Vale at the HHMI/University of California, San Francisco (UCSF, 2007~2011).His graduate and postdoctoral work in C. elegans on motor proteins,ciliogenesis, cell migration and asymmetric cell divisions made major impactson the field. Dr.Ou was recruited to Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 2011 throughthe program of “ Young Thousand Talent Plan ” initiated by the Chinese national government and later joined Tsinghua University in 2013. H ispublication record is impressive with a total of 32 publications in academic journals,especially those with high impact factors . His majorcontributions include the discovery of the biphasic intraflagellar transportand elucidation of underlying molecular mechanism; revealing novel function of polarizedmyosin in unequal-size daughters of asymmetric division; demonstration of thefinal fate of midbody after cell division and the improvement of fluorescencelive cell imaging technique with single cell resolution for visualization of C. elegans postembryonic neuroblastdevelopment. In addition, Dr. Ou has successfully adopted TALEN andCRISPR/Cas9-based techniques to generate conditional knockouts in somatic cellsrecently. Dr. Ou is recognized as an intellectually talented young scientist, whoknows how to raise important scientific questions and pursue the right answers . He is also an independent thinker and excellent decisionmaker. It is obvious that his lab is one of the most productive labs led by ayoung scientist returned from abroad, judging by any criteria. The Gu Xiaocheng lectureship award committee recognizes Dr Ou’s academic achievements and hope this award will inspire more young scientists to perform excellent research work.

英美的教授体系

按:事情源于翻译美国的Chair Professor和英国的Reader这两个职称,却难以找到一个合适的中文名词来对应,于是趴了一些诸如维基百科等资料,发现各国的教授体系相当复杂,想进行一个完整的介绍,显得力不从心。所以这里我只介绍当今英国和美国的两大教授职称体系,而且范围仅限于未退休的教学科研职称,即排除类似国内研究员体系的职称。 美国教授体系 美国的教授体制,显著的特点就是终身教授制度(tenure)。一般能晋升为副教授,即意味着拿到了终身教职,也就意味着以后不会因学术考核而被学校解聘了。美国的教授职称,分为教学研究型和纯研究型职称。前者类似国内的教授体系,后者类似于研究员体系。美国教授的教学研究型职称,主要包括四个阶段: 助理教授(assistant professor)。助理教授一般是三到六年的试用期。试用期后,如果工作出色,经过评选可以晋升为拥有终身教职的副教授。否则,卷铺盖走人。目前随着博士毕业生的数量增加,而全美的助理教授岗位有限,因此助理教授职位的竞争也日益激烈。于是,出现了获得博士学位后,需要经历多站的博士后研究,方能达到一定的学术能力,去应聘助理教授的职位。到此时,平均年龄差不多35岁上下了。 大约有一般的助理教授最终能够获得终身教职,不过在一些顶尖大学里,这个比例可能低至10%。因此,在助理教授期间,是工作科研最为拼命的时候,也是学术论文的高产期。经过这么六年左右的“煎熬”,很多人的头发都会逐渐变白,以及明显的掉发,甚至秃顶。漫步在美国一流大学里,碰见的研究人员大多十有八九头发变白即是此理。如果拿到终身教职的人,头发依旧乌黑,不外乎两种可能:一是染发了,二是该学者是出奇地厉害,可能二十出头就完成了科研及学术论文的积累,早早过了助理教授这个阶段。 副教授(associate professor)。经过那水生火热的六年左右助理教授期,如果成功获得终身教职,那么可以晋升为副教授。评判标准一般都是在助理教授期间有大量的学术成就,比如发表了影响力较大的专著,以及大量的学术论文,拿到了研究项目,对所在部门有突出的教学或服务。该评判标准又因所在学校不同,所要求的标准和严格程度也不同。 一般副教授都是终身教职。但是,也有人以副教授职位进行聘请后还没有终身职位的,这一般是从外部引入的人才。虽然目前该人还没有获得终身职位,但该职位也是有终身教职计划的,只不过可能目前该人还没有达到终身教职的水平。相反在一些学校,有人可能在获得终身教职之前提前提升为副教授。在这种情况下,此人可能继续申请终身教职,或者转求其他学校的终身教职。 正教授(full professor),即常见的称呼为教授(professor)。在副教授阶段取得卓越的学术成就后,会提升为教授。在美国,教授的等级是学术排名中的最高职位。而且,美国的教授也没有强制退休的年龄限制。许多正教授都伴有行政职务,比如院长(dean)都是从正教授中选出。 讲座教授(chair professor,简称“chair”)。到此,出现了“chair”这个字的翻译,有多种译法。比如特聘教授、杰出教授、名誉教授和讲座教授等等,此处暂且翻译为讲座教授,或者讲席教授。讲座教授又分为两种类型:一种是一些学校会给极少数有突出成就的正教授授予“大学教授(University Professor)”,“杰出教授(Distinguished Professor)”等头衔,比如麻省理工的“学院教授(Institute Professor)”、耶鲁大学的“斯特林教授(Sterling Professor)”,以及杜克大学的“詹姆斯·B·杜克教授(James B Duke Professor)”;另一种是被以基金、公司、个人名义赞助的正教授,即“冠名”或“名誉教授”(Endowed Professor)。简言之,不管哪种类型的讲座教授,都是正教授中的佼佼者。一般一个专业,只有一个讲座教授,而下可以有多个正教授。看一个正教授是不是讲座教授,简单的方式就是看看该人教授前面有没有冠以一个人名。比如2012年获得诺贝尔化学奖的杜克大学 Robert Lefkowitz教授 ,即为James B. Duke Professor of Medicine,这个讲座教授即为上述第一类的大学教授性质。而如杜克大学尼古拉斯环境学院的 Stuart Pimm教授 ,为Doris Duke Professor of Conservation Ecology。他的这个教授职位是由Doris Duke Fundation赞助的,即上述描述的第二类讲座教授。 至于“chair”这个字的具体含义,还可以分为两种:一是上述的讲座教授,二是指有学术职务的部门头头(chairs or heads of academic departments)。再如以杜克大学环境学院的 Dean Urban教授 为例,他是professor of landscape ecology,又是chair of the Nicholas School's Division of Environmental Sciences Policy。所以,Dean Urban教授是普通正教授,他的chair是环境科学与政策系的头头,即类似系主任的性质,而不是讲座教授的意思。面对“讲座教授”这个翻译,跟国内的“讲座教授”提法相当不一样。比如浙江大学的光彪讲座教授,其实是邀请一些校外的大牛来浙大临时授课,完全不是美国教授体系中的讲座教授。那最终如何翻译“chair”呢?于是乎我想到了把”chair professor“以这种形式表达:讲座教授(chair professor)。后面加注英文原意,免得被误解。据悉,每个讲座教授都有一把椅子,椅子背后刻着该讲座教授的头像和教授本人的名字。看来,“chair”一字,含义多重啊! 英国教授体系 英国的教授体制,目前主要由两种形式组成:一是英国古老大学的教授体制;二是英国的诸多大学也采用了美国的教授制度,比如华威大学(University of Warwick)和诺丁汉大学(University of Nottingham)。当前,澳大利亚和新西兰,还有大学依旧使用英国古老大学的教授体制,即包括: 讲师(Lecturer)。讲师的职位,在不同学校,定义相差非常大。对于英国的大学来说,讲师又分为暂时性和永久性两类。暂时性的讲师职位,可以由研究生担任,无需博士文凭,即是应学校暂时性、一学期或者半学期,无义务续聘的教学工作之需。对于永久性聘用的讲师,则要求有博士学位,比较接近于美国的助理教授职位。 资深讲师(Senior Lecturer)。资深讲师接近于美国的副教授职位。但是,在英国的一些理工大学(polytechnic),讲师又分为助理讲师(Lecturer)、讲师(Senior Lecturer)和专任讲师(Principle Lecturer)。此种,专任讲师相当于一般大学的资深讲师。理工大学的讲师,向下又切出一个助理讲师一职。这个职称也称为讲师,但不是终身聘用的,所以及其容易与一般大学的讲师混淆。 准教授(Reader)。“Reader”的职位是英国特色,难以找到一个匹配的词来描述。因为英国古老大学的教授(Professor)职位非常少,所以会出现一个教授下面三到四个准教授,其实接近于美国的正教授。牛津大学(University of Oxford)已经废除了准教授这个职务,一律以讲师职位代替。所以牛津大学的讲师,接近于美国体系的副教授。 教授(Professor)。英国古老大学的教授职位相当少,接近于美国的讲座教授。英国也有类似美国讲座教授的头衔,比如曾经牛顿和霍金拥有的剑桥大学卢卡斯讲座教授 Lucasian Chair of Mathematics ,这估计是神一样的职位了。 英美中三国教授体系比较 通过上述介绍,大体上可以认为:英国的讲师教职接近于美国的助理教授,英国的资深讲师接近于美国的副教授,英国的准教授接近于美国的正教授,英国的教授接近于美国的讲座教授。但是这并不确定。比如,英国华威大学尝试教授体制与美国对接,以便人才引用。对于美国的助理教授,华威大学可以给予永久聘任的讲师职位,而终身职的华威大学讲师职位到了美国,则变成非终身职的助理教授。这之间有一定的差别。 相对我国,跟美国的教授体系划分非常相似。只不过许多国内高校的讲师是终身职,但目前逐渐变为合同制,直到拿到副教授职位,似乎在跟美国的教授体制靠拢。而对于国内研究员体系的职位,由于不参与教学工作,非常接近于美国的纯研究职位,即助理研究员接近于Research assistant professor,副研究员接近于Research assosiate professor,及研究员接近于Research professor。所以,翻译研究员体系的职位,前面加上“Research”或许更为妥当。 以上为本人扒了网上相关资料后,结合跟一些国外教授聊天后获得的心得,特分享于此,希望不妥之处予以指正。 原文链接: http://sixf.org/cn/2014/02/academic-rank-professorship-uk-us/ 参考资料: Michael I. Professor Gu Xiaocheng served as the chief coordinator representing China for the CUSBEA (China-United States Biology and Biochemistry Examinations and Applications) Program, in the 1980s which brought over 400 students from China to pursue Ph.D. degrees in the US, thus leading the way for Chinese students to study life sciences abroad and return to work in China. She organized a series of conferences that allowed CUSBEA students and others to continue their contacts. The 2013 Gu Xiaocheng lecture award is shared by Dr. Boxun Lu and Dr. Nan Liu. ​ Dr. Boxun Lu received his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine in 2009. His d issertation research in Dr. Dejian Ren’s lab was on the neuronal excitability control via the sodium background leak channel. He revealed the molecular identity of the sodium background leak channel that is essential for basal neuronal excitability and rhythmic control, and the major molecular mechanism of neuronal excitability regulation by neuropeptide and extracellular calcium, which are essential for physiological and pathophysiological functions such as pain feeling, sleep and epilepsy. He was a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at Novartis Institutes of Biomedical Research, working on genetic targets in a broad spectrum of disease models, including patient fibroblasts, mouse knock-in cell lines, primary mouse neurons, hESC/iPSC derived neurons and in vivo fly models. Dr. Lu was recruited through the Young Thousand Talent Plan by the Chinese national government to the School of Life Sciences, Fudan University, in 2012. He has established a lab to work on target discovery for neurodegenerative disorders, with a focus on polyQ diseases such as Huntington’s disease. He is recognized as an outstanding young scientist with unique experience and talent in pioneering studies of neuronal diseases. ​ Dr. Nan Liu received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvaniain 2009. Mentored by Dr. Bonini (an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute),Dr. Liu focused on microRNAs in flies, where he showed a keen insight in revealing a new role in aging and protection from neurodegenerative disease. After completing abrief postdoctoral training with Dr. Bonini, he became a research associate in Dr. Yishi Jin’s lab at the University of California, San Diego, working on neurite injury using C. elegans as a model. Dr. Liu was recruited through the Young Thousand Talent Plan by the Chinese national government to the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Biology and Chemistry (the IRCBC), Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences,in 2013. He will continue to work on Drosophila miRNAs. Since many of miRNAs show features of evolutionary conservations, these studies will shed light on to our understanding of human aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Liu is recognized as being technically gifted and capable of rapidly incorporating new findings from the literature into his experiments. He has an outstanding sense of urgency, a strong work ethic, and is an insightful and original thinker.

The first is that his philosophy about research: worked-finished-published. 听到这儿的时候, 我想起了多年前,念硕士时候, 我的导师汪先生也曾对我说过,对待研究需要,如何如何,其中也有一条就是,worked, finished and published。 当时是太年轻没有牢记,现在又从Thomas口中说出,感觉确实是这样。 特别是需要找工作,申请什么东东的时候。 这么多年来, 俺搞的就是, worked -- finished -- forgotten in the harddisk, 或者,worked -- finished -- not allowed to publish. 等解放了,再挖出来看看。呵呵。

Last night, I wrote a short Blog entitled "LIU Lao Lao goes to Shanghai," but it was eaten by the internet. Things developed quickly since then, so I will just move on... Going through PVG is my yearly routine, but I can hardly remember ever spending much time to visit the city. The only exception was a few years ago, when I toured five cities in China with three other American women. Shanghai was our last stop, and we went shopping! This summer, I planned to visit Nanjing, but things didn't work out. So, I had two days to kill somewhere else. Why not in Shanghai? Why not! So far, I have a morning lecture scheduled on the 20th, and a dinner reunion with my college classmates. Since I plan to stay near Jing An Temple, I am sure I can have lots of fun sightseeing, or shopping! Anyone wants to join me for an afternoon tea?

Why we cooperate? Since every living creature is living for its own purpose and benefits, it is very hard to believe that actually cooperation can naturally happen in nature. However, spontaneous cooperation is essential for the first multi-cellular organism to exit in the early history of life on earth. Why could we cooperate? How it comes into being. Martin Nowak gave a clear demonstration how it could happen in nature. Max Perutz: interview http://www.vega.org.uk/video/programme/1 A young man in his 17 claimed that only winning a Nobel prize can justify his career change from inheriting his father's textile factory to studying Chemistry. A researcher spent 22 years to elucidate one protein's structure, which has several thousands of atoms and was quite beyond any scientist's imagination at that time. A man finally proved that oxygen carrying ability of Haemoglobin comes from its structure and relevant chemical bonds. A pioneering biophysicist finally earned his Nobel prize in 1962, and was the founder of the Laboratory for Molecular Biology in Cambridge, the birthplace of modern molecular biology. It is nobody but Max Perutz. He also gave some useful tips how to run a scientifically active research group, how to choose a research topic and how to run a seminar to reward everybody. I am quite surprized to find that this great man had a unforgetable experience of being in prison of citizens of enemy countries in Canada for several years during the World War II. Amazingly, he, united with other scientists, opened a prison university to give bright kids a education even in such a distressing time. END
