Lab Philosophy How to be a good scientist is a question I keep asking myself. Here are a few random thoughts based my own experience and my observation of colleagues and trainees. I see this as my work philosophy and I hope it could be helpful to people in my group. 1. Follow passion. Follow nothing but your passion. If you are not motivated by your projects, do yourself a favor and seek immediate change. 2. Fly high. Everybody loves low-hanging fruit. Fly as high as possible so that you can see fruits others don't see, or fruits that are low to you but high to others. 3. Think differently. You may find a high-hanging fruit reachable from a different angle. 4. Say no. Say no to a hundred opportunities to ensure the success of one. 5. Have backup. Productive people work on several projects simultaneously and employ multiple approaches in the same project in parallel, not in serial. 6. Embrace failure. You may get a quick paper if everything go as planned, but you can grow faster by learning from failure. 7. Keep records. Prepare monkey-proof documentation so that others can easily follow and appreciate your work. 8. Be nice. Volunteer work is an easy way to win friends and build collaborations. Yesterday, we go to OakWood on time (9:00). Dr. Nichols give us a regular check. In terms of Schedule of Dr. Jones, we should go into lab inSaturday. But Dr. Nichols find a free ward for us, so the schedule is charged to today. We are led into the operation area and give a single room L17. Kareli is assigned to us. She is a fat women and very nice. Shearrange us and tell some matters need attention. At noon, the Zhang, who is aCanadastudent and very gentle and quiet girl, tells me where is the cafeteria. After I buy some launch, I hurry to bring back some stuffs from my car in park. My wife very enjoy this launch. Afternoon, my wife undergoes some examinations. The diner is also in cafeteria. The USA doctor is a very back-busting work, whosescheduleis from 7:00 to 19:00 (12 clocks). About 21:00, the transfusion bottle (IV) is provided for induction. But the water drop is very very slow, a little of water is injected until next morning.
Wait, always bored and tired! Yesterday,I chat with two USA young friends, Matter and Mash, for one whole day. Happy! Morning, on schedule I have a class for NSF research. But I am late because I must go office tocontinueinsurance. One old women is teacher and 6 students. I always talk about some interesting thing. Today, I speak three times. Today, we go to OakWood at noon. Dr Jones give us a nice check and ask some questions. Everything sounds good! He provide a schedule: tomorrow, next Tuesday, next Wednesday, next Friday. If these are invalid, finally next Saturday we go into Lab. Afternoon, when we go home and check our MailBox. I see God. My wife's EAC is coming here. We have wait it for two months. When lunch in OakWood (two cheese pizzas), we also talk about it. Congratulations for my wife. Tomorrow, after doing monitor in OakWood, we will go IHS to apply for SS number.
A Ph.D student died. On his way to heaven, he asked an angel: "Is there any lab in heaven?" "Yes, there're a lot." Angel answered. Then he suddenly decided to go to hell. But the Angel supplemented: "Hell is full of supervisors..."
I sat through C-MORE's Summer Course Week 5, taught by four visiting faculty. They are all biologists of some kind, but in many ways they know as much physical oceanography as some physical oceanographers do. Isn't that COOL? Here, I want to bring to your attention the RUCOOL! If you are thinking about entering a graduate program on coastal ocean, you should check out the RUCOOL! Welcome to the Rutgers University Coastal Ocean Observation Lab ! http://rucool.marine.rutgers.edu/index.php/About-RU-COOL/ In particular, check out Prof. Oscar Schofield: http://rucool.marine.rutgers.edu/index.php/People-Details/people-faculty-oscar-schofield.html

Learn more... http://www.measurementlab.net/ About Measurement Lab Measurement Measurement Lab (M-Lab) is an open, distributed server platform for researchers to deploy Internet measurement tools. The goal of M-Lab is to advance network research and empower the public with useful information about their broadband connections. By enhancing Internet transparency, M-Lab helps sustain a healthy, innovative Internet. When an Internet application doesn't work as expected, how can you tell whether the problem is caused by your broadband connection, the application or something else? It can be very difficult for professional network administrators, let alone average Internet users, to answer this sort of question today. Transparency has always been an essential component of the Internet's success, and Internet users deserve to be well-informed about the performance of their broadband connections. For that to happen, researchers need resources to develop new analytical tools. That's where M-Lab comes in. Tools for Users Many researchers are already developing tools that allow users to test their broadband connections by briefly communicating with a server elsewhere on the Internet. The M-Lab platform supports the development of these measurement tools. An Open Platform for Researchers M-Lab assists scientific research by providing widely-distributed servers and ample connectivity for researchers' use. Each tool will be allocated dedicated resources on the M-Lab platform to facilitate accurate measurements. Server-side tools will be openly licensed and operated to allow third-parties to develop their own client-side measurement software. Better, Open Data for Everyone All data collected via M-Lab will be made available to the research community to allow researchers to build on a common pool of network measurement data. M-Lab today and in the future M-Lab is a collaborative effort led by researchers in partnership with companies and other institutions. Today, M-Lab is only at the beginning of its development. Five tools are currently available, running on 45 servers in 15 locations. In order to achieve our goals, M-Lab depends on the active support of additional partners, and we welcome input from anyone interested in helping the platform flourish. If you are an Internet user and want to run the tools, check out our Tools page . If you are a company, institution or researcher interested in learning more about using and supporting M-Lab, learn more here .
