This is a new category I added to my Blog today. I had some Blog entrances on p ost docs, but I could not find them any more. Oh wait, here is a search function for " E diting Blog" mode. Never mind, I found them, and now they are all under "Post docs." Thanks, J .B. You gave me a reason to Blog on this topic, a gain.
http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/science/articles?type=article_typevalue=Postdoc+journalyear=2011 I hope this link works. It's Nature archive of articles written by post docs. I didn't read them all, but thought they might be of interests to some of you, p o st docs.
More than 25 years ago, I was searching for a Ph.D. adviser in the US. I was not thinking of the reputation of a university (though I should); instead, I was “professor picking.” I “studied” each professor I was going to write a letter to, and applied to three. The end results: I was offered a full “RA” by a professor, I was put on a wait list for spring semester by another, and I was turned down by a school (because I didn’t have TOEFL or GRE). I thought that I was doing the right thing by “studying” these future professors, namely their publicasions. I wanted to make sure I would study under the “right type” of professors. My efforts paid off. Today, I received a nice email from a very able Ph.D. His English writing was pretty good (even by my high standard as an English editor), and his CV was strong, too. HOWEVER, he had no clue about who I am and what I can (and cannot) do. So, I thought I should at least let him know how to find a good match for his next step (up), by writing this Blog for him. Good luck, P.J.
I wanted to write about this topic for a long time, but of course it was a matter of time, or the lack of it. Nowadays, one may be a post doc at one place (or one country), and move on to another post doc at another place (or another country), and on and on and on. I am not making this up. I have seen it with my own eyes, not just based on some rumors. (I didn't know when I wrote this Blog that there ar e articles in Nature and Science on this issue!) If you love to travel around the country or around the world, there is nothing wrong with being a post doc forever as long as you are wanted. If you have a family and a child, you probably want to settle down before your child starts his high school, which is four years in the U.S. Fine, i f you can find a post doc position for about four years and live near a great public school; go for it. If you want a job, a real job, not just a post doc position, then you need to think hard about your future. Sometimes, it’s better to move on to a different type of job or even to a different field than being stuck in a dungeon... ps. I revised it a bit today, Nov. 9, 2012 when I started to collect info under " Post docs."
