How to improve impact factor of a journal ? Picture source: http://vadlo.com/cartoons.php?id=115 Impact factorhas become an important indicator forjournal quality in spite of manyarguement about it. Then how to improve impact factor of a journal? When being asked this question, James Testa, Vice president of Thomson Reuters Science, Technology, and Medical Information Group replied, "Select the best manuscript, provide better service". German editor Dr. Johanna Schwarz wrote a long list of methods to improve impact factor afterour Editor-in-Chief Prof. Cui asked for Dr. Schwarz's suggestions. To share with peers, I copiedwhat Dr. Schwarz wrote as follows. - Improve article quality -Get well cited authors to publish in your journal - Find which subtopics are well cited and encourage articles in these subtopics. Publish special issues on hot topics. - Solicit good review articles. Review articles are usually well cited (three times more, on average, than a regular article). - Publicize important articles and special issues at conferences, etc. - Encourage your colleagues to read and cite the journal. - If you publish in other journals, make sure to cite your journal frequently. - To limit the number of articles that count for the IF: Design short communications to make them non-citable material. - Be careful with proceedings. Many proceedings are not well cited. However, conferences on hot topics can be advantageous. - Timing of article publication: Publish important articles (e.g. review articles), and special issues on hot topics at the beginning of the year. This gives them more time to accumulate citations for the Impact Factor. This works, because on average, the number of citations to an article increases with the age of the article for at least 3-4 years. The number of citations to a 3-year old article is greater than the number of citations to a 2-year old article, which is greater than the number of citations to a 1-year old article. You can see that fact in the half life plots in the JCR. There are hardly any journals for which the half life is shorter than three years. During the first year of the life of an article it usually doesn’t have many citations, if any at all. They ramp up after that. An article published in December 2009 will contribute hardly anything to the IF for 2010 and only some to the IF for 2011. An article published in January 2009 will already contribute to the IF for 2010, and even more for the IF for 2011. Please give your valuable suggestions on this topic! Note: The impact factor , often abbreviated IF , is a measure reflecting the average number of citations to articles published in science and social science journals.
... in a negative way for the locals. The traffic to work (at U. Hawaii) was much worse than usual. I wish I could stay home for the rest of the week. http://www.civilbeat.com/topics/apec-2011-hawaii-survival-guide/
