This is explained for a large part by an increased attention of the academic world in algoritmic trading. Moreover, as lot of papers suggest, the profitability has been shifted to an intra-daily format. In this segment, speed is what counts. For instance, Scholtus and Van Dijk (2012) state that strategies that yield a positive return when they experience no delay, a delay of 200 milliseconds is enough to lower their performance significanlty. Given the competition on the market from large institutions, such as JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley, a private investor has always a competative disadvantage due to its lack of the required technology. Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement in the modelling of stochastic intra-daily processes such as the VWAP and daily volatility . A key ingredient in these research areas is proper and clean (historical and up-to-date) intra-daily data. On the web there are various resources available, but most of them require a relatively high fee. Other solutions require the use of a specific software. However, there are ways to retrieve intra-daily data for free using Google Finance and also without any software. Using Matlab If you are familiar with MatLab you can use parts of the package ' Volume Weighted Average Price from Intra-Daily Data ' by Semin Ibisevic referenced at Qoppa Investment Society. This package allows you to (1) retrieve intra-daily stock price data from Google Finance; (2) calculate the VWAP at the end of each trading day; and (3) transform intra-daily data to a daily format. It is a relatively flexible function as it only requires the user to input the ticker symbol and the exchange where the security is listed on. Additionally, the user can define the frequency of the data (1 second or higher) and the period (for instance past 10 days). Without software If you don't have Matlab you can replicate parts of the code manually. The package above connects with Google Finance and downloads a spreadsheet of intra-daily data consisting of the prices high, open, low, close and volume from: Google Finance get price 1 . You can adjust this to your own preferences by 'seeing' the address as: Google Finance get price 2 , where TICKER refers to the ticker symbol of the security at Google Finance; EXCHANGE is where the security is listed on; Hint: to track these inputs, for instance for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, you search the security of interest at Google Finance and then you can find at the top: (INDEXDJX:.DJI) which obviously refers to (EXCHANGE:TICKER). INTERVAL defines the frequency (60 = 60 seconds). PERIOD is the historical data period (see also Google Finance), here 10d refers to the past 10 days (up to current time). 你一定很熟悉这样的电视广告词:“我们的价钱是29.99元。而且如果你现在就打电话,你还能得到xxxx,免费!” “免费”,可能是用得最多的广告词了。不知你有没有想过,“免费”到底有多大吸引力?顾客付一笔钱得到两样东西,把其中一样算成“免费”有什么意义? 事实上,“免费”的魔力还真不小。当亚马逊书店(Amazon)推出消费超过25美元就有“免费”运送的服务后,销售量大大增加。很多顾客为了凑足25美元消费额而购买额外的物品。但在法国,却是一切静悄悄。原来,由于疏忽,那里的运送不是免费而是1法郎(相当于10美分)。10美分有那么重要吗?不是。重要的是“免费”两个字! “免费”效应甚至可以用简单的实验来证明。让受试者在以下三者中选一:花26美分买一种本来值很贵的巧克力;花1美分买一种本来较便宜的巧克力;或者什么都不买。然后,把两者的价钱各降一分,变成25美分和“免费”。在后一种情况下,选择第二种(即免费的)巧克力的人大大增多,而选择较贵的巧克力的人大大减少。其实,两种选择的得失比较并没有变化很大。但人们的反应,却因为“免费”而大不相同。这种情况其实相当普遍。用实物交换,也是如此。用纯粹钱的交换(花钱买代价劵),也是如此。买更昂贵的东西如几百块的电视机,也是如此。去掉“什么都不买”的选项,也还是如此。甚至对鬼节出来讨糖的小孩子做实验,结果也一样。 当然,这个结果有很多可能的原因。也许“免费”不仅省了1美分,而且省去了掏钱,找钱的麻烦?也许人们不是看减价的绝对值,而是看减价的幅度?也许“免费”让人们觉得特别安全,绝对不会吃亏?也许不涉及钱使得人们对物品的感受不同?这些理由有的是理性的,其余是以前研究过的非理性反应。可是这些可能性都被其他实验否定了。而被一个问卷实验所证实的可能是:人们对于“免费”有一种非理性的特殊的感受。 其实,我们都知道真正的“免费”是没有的。很多“免费”的条件是购买其他物品。有时为了得到“免费”的东西要花很多时间来填表或排队。在上面讲到的实验中,“免费”的代价是“机会”。为了得到免费的便宜,人们放弃了另一个便宜。所以,免费并不是没有风险,绝对合算的。然而,人们对“免费”还是趋之若鹜。 有没有办法消解“免费”的咒语呢?上面说的问卷实验其实提供了一个办法。在这个实验中,受试者在作出决定前先要回答一个问卷,表明他们对拥有昂贵的巧克力的倾向有多少,和对少花钱的倾向有多少。然后,他们再选要不要免费的巧克力。结果,在巧克力要1美分和免费的情况下,选择的结果就没什么差别了。这说明,我们把所有得益放在一起考虑,把所有花费放在一起考虑,就不会被“免费”两个字一叶障目了。 话说回来,商家提供的免费也不都是骗局。很多时候一点小恩小惠会给人带来很温謦的感觉。小时候到摊头上买鱼,摊主总会加上一把葱姜,让我觉得很体贴。中国餐馆往往饭后会送上一碗甜汤或一碟水果,带来一个完美的句号。上次买新车时,车行特地给车加满了油,让我更有心满意足的体验。这些都是很小的钱数,而且是在交易以后提供的。但不知不觉,就给双方的关系带来一点亮色。这时如果哪一方提出要给钱,那就是很煞风景的事了。在人际关系的层面上,“免费”是不是也有着特别的魔力呢?那就是另一篇文章的内容了(见篇末介绍的“千里送鹅毛的心理学”)。 【注】本文参照了以下文章:K. Elevation models from SRTM now available for download free of charge 25 May 2011 Representations of SRTM data 16.26 MB Share Information 1 / 3 When Space Shuttle Endeavour launched on 11 February 2000 for the 'Shuttle Radar Topography Mission' (SRTM), it was carrying two radar antennas; one in the shuttle's payload bay and the other on the end of a 60-metre mast. Over the course of eleven days, researchers at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) acquired data for a three-dimensional terrain model of large areas of the Earth. Now, DLR is making these data available for scientific purposes via EOWEB , free of charge. The SRTM structure was one-of-a-kind; the mast, which was deployed from the loading bay of the Shuttle during flight, was the longest man-made structure in space at that time. During the course of its orbit around the Earth, the payload antenna transmitted radar signals earthwards, and both antennas received radar signal reflections. The radar images provided a representation of Earth's surface viewed from two different positions, enabling researchers at DLR's German Remote Sensing Data Center (Deutsches Fernerkundungsdatenzentrum; DFD) to derive a precise Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the surface of the Earth. "For the first time ever, we had a dataset characterised by uniform quality around the globe," stated DFD Director Stefan Dech. By the time Endeavour returned to Kennedy Space Center on 22 February 2000, DLR had obtained high-precision mapping data for more than 113 million square kilometres of the Earth from an altitude of about 230 kilometres – forming the basis for what became known as the 'Map of the 21st Century'. During the mission, the radars allowed researchers to obtain elevation data regardless of the time of day and weather conditions. The flight path of Endeavour dictated the areas imaged by the radars; the SRTM data covered regions with latitudes between 60 degrees north and about 60 degrees south – the polar regions were inaccessible. While NASA used a C-band radar to record the entire accessible land surface of Earth with an altitude precision of plus or minus ten metres, DLR used an X-band radar to cover a smaller area, but with a precision of plus or minus six metres. "The accuracy of these global elevation models has yet to be surpassed," said Dech. This explains why, eleven years later, many researchers are still using these datasets. The SRTM was not just a milestone in terms of high-precision mapping of the Earth from space; it was also the precursor to and a test for the current TanDEM-X mission, which involves two identical German radar satellites orbiting Earth in formation to record a comprehensive and even more precise DEM that is scheduled for completion in 2013. The X-band DEMs from the SRTM mission have resolution of one arcsecond, corresponding to a pixel size of 25 metres at central latitudes. Each DEM covers an area of 2.5 by 2.5 degrees and is composed of 'tiles', each measuring 15 arcminutes by 15 arcminutes (900 by 900 data points). They can be downloaded free of charge by registering with EOWEB. Registered users can download these datasets from an FTP server. SRTM data can be incorporated directly into digital maps or geographical information systems by means of a standardised Web Map Service (WMS). Landsat 5 was launched in 1984 and designed to last 3 years. The USGS assumed operation of Landsat 5 in 2001 and managed to bring the aging satellite back from the brink of total failure on several occasions following the malfunction of key subsystems. There is now an increasing likelihood that the Landsat 5 mission is nearing its end. “This anticipated decline of Landsat 5 provides confirmation of the importance of the timely launch of the next Landsat mission and the need for an operational and reliable National Land Imaging System,” stated Anne Castle, Assistant Secretary for Water and Science at the U.S. Department of the Interior. “The USGS is committed to maintaining the unique long term imaging database that the Landsat program provides.” For several months, the Landsat flight operations team has been closely tracking the fluctuating performance of an amplifier essential for transmitting land-surface images from the Landsat 5 satellite to ground receiving stations in the U.S. and around the world. Over the past 10 days, problems with the amplifier have led to drastically reduced image download capabilities, a sign of impending failure. Numerous engineering and technical adjustments have been made to Landsat 5 in the past several days to sustain at least a limited imaging capability, but performance has continued to decline. Instead of continuing to operate until the amplifier fails completely, which could bring the mission to an end, USGS engineers have suspended imaging activities for an initial period of 90 days in order to explore every possible option for restoring satellite-to-ground image transmissions. The USGS-operated Landsat 7 remains in orbit collecting global imagery. Since its launch in 1999 with a 5-year design life, Landsat 7 has experienced an instrument anomaly which reduces the amount of data collected per image. Landsat 8, currently called the Landsat Data Continuity Mission, is now scheduled to be launched in January 2013.

These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains. This platform takes its name from the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator , developed by SCImago from the widely known algorithm Google PageRank . This indicator shows the visibility of the journals contained in the Scopus database from 1996. SCImago is a research group from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientficas (CSIC), University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid) and Alcal de Henares, dedicated to information analysis, representation and retrieval by means of visualisation techniques. As well as SJR Portal, SCImago has developed The Atlas of Science project , which proposes the creation of an information system whose major aim is to achieve a graphic representation of IberoAmerican Science Research.
