套用公元一世纪的罗马修辞学家昆体良( Quintilian )的一句话: “ Clear writing is writing that is incapable of being misunderstood ” 。 [注:以上部分编译自一本专著 (1) ] 那么到底如何才能 write clearly ,有个网站 ( 点击参考: How to Write Clearly - The 10 Most Important Principles ) 提出了十项原则(够多的!我党也才只是提出了四项基本原则) , 个人觉得非常好,实录如下,并补充一下自己的一点体会: 1. Use Short Sentences . 我们中国作者在英语的一个很大优势就是语法很强,所以往往句子写的很长,还没有语法错误,我最长就曾写过长达四、五行的一个句子。这种句子,读者和审稿人读起来会非常费劲,一定要避免,尽量使一句话只有 10-20 个单词。我们写论文的目的只是为了让审稿人和读者明白自己文章本身的内容,不是为了显摆自己的英语如何的 NB, 就算牛,作为来自非英语国家的老中,还能玩得过人家老美、老英?! 2. Prefer the Simple to the Complex . 就是尽量用一些简单的词,别玩一些偏僻词,整得自己很有学问似的,其实老美,尤其是平常说话,用的基本都是非常简单的常用的词,但是很有沟通效果,也很生动。 3.Prefer the Familiar Word . 这个就无需多说了,当然用自己熟悉的词,不熟悉,我们也搞不定啊。 4. Avoid Unnecessary Words. 避免不必要的词,这一点很有必要,因为有的期刊是按字数收出版费的,另外文章的总字数,许多 SCI 国际期刊都有具体的不同规定和限制。 5. Use Action Verbs . 即尽量用动词,比较: "He drove very fast down the road." 和 “He sped down the road". 为何后者更好?! 6. Write as you Talk . 这个恐怕是针对英美人说的。 7. Use Terms your Reader Can Picture . 别用太抽象的词 . 8. Connect with your Reader's Experience . 换位思考,上面已经详述。 9. Use Variety . 同一个意思,变换说法,别太单调。 10 .Write to Express not Impress . It is still all too often the case that people resort to unfamiliar, long words and meandering prose, especially when making formal announcements. Policemen say, "the thief was apprehended", not, "We caught the thief". Notices say, "Please refrain from smoking", rather than, "Please do not smoke". Nobody actually uses the word 'refrain' in normal conversation so why use it in a notice? It is done to sound important, make the notice sound official, done to impress, not express. 这个有点是属于高级技巧了,需要对英语有很好的驾驭能力方可熟练应用,觉得自己的段位不够,就照录如上最后一点,恐自己理解错了。
When you mean “for example,” use e.g. It is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase exempli gratia . When you mean “that is,” use “i.e.” It is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase id est . Either can be used to clarify a preceding statement, the first by example, the second by restating the idea more clearly or expanding upon it. Because these uses are so similar, the two abbreviations are easily confused. If you just stick with good old English “for example” and “that is” you won’t give anyone a chance to sneer at you. If you insist on using the abbreviation, perhaps “example given” will remind you to use “e.g.,” while “in effect” suggests “I.E.” Since e.g. indicates a partial list, it is redundant to add “etc.” at the end of a list introduced by this abbreviation. http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/e.g.html 英文论文中i.e.,e.g.,etc.的正确用法 i.e. 是拉丁文 id est 的缩写,它的意思就是“那就是说,换句话说”,等同于“that is,in other words” ,目的是用来进一步解释前面所说的观点。 e.g. 是拉丁文 exempli gratia 的缩写,它的意思是“举个例子,比如”,等同与“for example”,目的就是用几个例子来说明前面的观点。 etc.就比较好理解了,它是 etcetera 的缩写,意思是“等等”,相当于“and so on” e.g. 和 etc. 不能出现在同一句话中,因为 e.g. 是表示泛泛的举几个例子,并没有囊括所有的实例,其中就已经包含“等等”,如果再加一个 etc. 就画蛇添足了,例如下面这句话就是错的: Writing instructors focus on a number of complex skills that require extensive practice (e.g., organization, clear expression, logical thinking, etc.) 注意,用它们的时候,不要把“小点”给落了~ 看看下面4句句子,你能说出哪些是正确的,哪些是错误的吗? 1. The evaluation noted that the employee had frequently exhibited irresponsible behavior (i.e., coming to work late, failing to complete projects). 2. Writing instructors focus on a number of complex skills that require extensive practice (e.g., organization, clear expression, logical thinking, etc.) 3. The general rule is that if a number can be expressed in three words or fewer, it should be written out (e.g., two hundred seventy). 4. Use a comma to enclose (i.e., both before and after) the year in a month-day-year sequence. 记成"example given",把i.e.记成"in effect"。 总的来说,这两个缩写只在专业的书面语中使用,口语中是从来不用的。所以要是你实在搞不清楚,那就索性不要用它们,用简单的“for example”和“that is”代替就OK,:-) http://blog.ednchina.com/ic_net66/43177/message.aspx #

For example, the study did not show if the side effects from initial copper burst can be avoid with the polymer formulation. 5、对hypothesis的清晰界定: A hypothesis needs to be presented。 6、对某个概念或工具使用的rationale/定义概念: What was the rationale for the film/SBF volume ratio? 7、对研究问题的定义: Try to set the problem discussed in this paper in more clear, write one section to define the problem 8、如何凸现原创性以及如何充分地写literature review: The topic is novel but the application proposed is not so novel. 9、对claim,如A>B的证明,verification: There is no experimental comparison of the algorithm with previously known work, so it is impossible to judge whether the algorithm is an improvement on previous work. 10、严谨度问题: MNQ is easier than the primitive PNQS, how to prove that. 11、格式(重视程度): ◆ In addition, the list of references is not in our style. It is close but not completely correct. I have attached a pdf file with "Instructions for Authors" which shows examples. ◆ Before submitting a revision be sure that your material is properly prepared and formatted. If you are unsure, please consult the formatting nstructions to authors that are given under the "Instructions and Forms" button in he upper right-hand corner of the screen. 12、语言问题(出现最多的问题): 有关语言的审稿人意见: ◆ It is noted that your manuscript needs careful editing by someone with expertise in technical English editing paying particular attention to English grammar, spelling, and sentence structure so that the goals and results of the study are clear to the reader. ◆ The authors must have their work reviewed by a proper translation/reviewing service before submission; only then can a proper review be performed. Most sentences contain grammatical and/or spelling mistakes or are not complete sentences. ◆ As presented, the writing is not acceptable for the journal. There are pro blems with sentence structure, verb tense, and clause construction. ◆ The English of your manuscript must be improved before resubmission. We str ongly suggest that you obtain assistance from a colleague who is well-versed i n English or whose native language is English. ◆ Please have someone competent in the English language and the subject matte r of your paper go over the paper and correct it. ? ◆ the quality of English needs improving. 来自编辑的鼓励: Encouragement from reviewers: ◆ I would be very glad to re-review the paper in greater depth once it has be en edited because the subject is interesting. ◆ There is continued interest in your manuscript titled "……" which you subm itted to the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research: Part B - Applied Biomat erials. ◆ The Submission has been greatly improved and is worthy of publication. 本文来自CSDN博客,转载请标明出处: http://blog.csdn.net/chenyusiyuan/archive/2008/12/03/3437577.aspx
写作前准备】 1、自己的实验结果是否够发一篇SCI文章? 2、适合发表在什么杂志?是选择专业期刊?还是综合期刊? 3、为什么类型的投稿(Types of submission)?比如Articles(论著);Reviews(综述);Reports(报告);Letter to editor(来信)等。 (The number of characters must be listed on the title page)。 (Thank you very much for the excellent and professional revision of our manuscript. In future, I will send you my English manuscripts for proofreading! I will acknowledge your help in the footnote.)和在文章中致谢(We thank *** for critical reading of the manuscript.)。 11、注意文章中不要有中文输入法情况下的标点符号(老外的计算机操作系统可能识别为乱码或者为非法程序)。 12、标点符号是否正确?空格是否恰当? 13、注意缩写的格式,时间表示的格式,希腊字母的格式。 14、该斜体的地方是否是斜体(in vitro,in vivo等)。 建议尽量使用hotmail.com,yahoo.com,gmail.com等邮箱。
The Most Common Habits from more than 200 English Papers written by Graduate Chinese Engineering Students(by Felicia Brittman) This paper presents some of the most common Chinese-English habits observed from over two hundred English technical papers by Chinese writers. The habits are explained and in most cases, example text from an actual paper is given along with preferred text. An attempt is made to explain how to correct and prevent such mistakes. In some cases a possible explanation of why the habit occurs is also given. This paper can serve as an individual guide to editing technical papers especially when a native English-speaking editor is unavailable. 全文见附件: The Most Common Habits from more than 200 English
