Treated oil and gas wastewater flows into a stream in western Pennsylvania. A new Duke study finds stream sediments at disposal sites such as this one have levels of radioactivity that are 650 times higher than at unaffected upstream sites. 其研究成果于 2018 年 1 月 4 日在《环境科学与技术》( Environmental Science and Technology )杂志上发表—— Nancy E. While this practice was largely discontinued in 2011 for unconventional Marcellus OGW at facilities permitted to release high salinity effluents, it continues for conventional OGW. This study aimed to evaluate the environmental implications of the policy allowing the disposal of conventional OGW. We collected stream sediments from three disposal sites receiving treated OGW between 2014 and 2017 and measured 228 Ra, 226 Ra, and their decay products, 228 Th and 210 Pb, respectively. We consistently found elevated activities of 228 Ra and 226 Ra in stream sediments in the vicinity of the outfall (total Ra = 90–25,000 Bq/kg) compared to upstream sediments (20–80 Bq/kg). In 2015 and 2017, 228 Th/ 228 Ra activity ratios in sediments from two disposal sites were relatively low (0.2–0.7), indicating that a portion of the Ra has accumulated in the sediments in recent (3) years, when no unconventional Marcellus OGW was reportedly discharged. 228 Ra/ 226 Ra activity ratios were also higher than what would be expected solely from disposal of low 228 Ra/ 226 Ra Marcellus OGW. Based on these variations, we concluded that recent disposal of treated conventional OGW is the source of high Ra in stream sediments at CWT facility disposal sites. Consequently, policies pertaining to the disposal of only unconventional fluids are not adequate in preventing radioactive contamination in sediments at disposal sites, and the permission to release treated Ra-rich conventional OGW through CWT facilities should be reconsidered.
STONY BROOK, NY, May 29, 2012 – Bluefin tuna exposed to radioactivity that leaked into the Pacific Ocean after Japan’s Fukushima Dai-ichi power plants were damaged by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11, 2011, carried that radioactivity to the waters off California, a new study by scientists from Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) and Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station has revealed. And while the radioactivity levels in the Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) posed no public health threat, these findings represent the first documented instance of the transport of radioactive materials in the sea through a biological migration. The study, " Pacific Bluefin Tuna Transport Fukushima-Derived Radionuclides from Japan to California ” has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the US. The research was funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation . SoMAS professor Nicholas Fisher, Ph.D., and postdoctoral scholar Zofia Baumann and Daniel Madigan of Stanford measured the levels of two radioactive isotopes of cesium in bluefin tuna caught in August 2011 off the coast of San Diego, California. Pacific bluefin tuna spawn in the western Pacific and many migrate in their first or second year to the waters of the eastern Pacific. Analyzing the radionuclide content in top marine predators such as bluefin tuna should provide unequivocal evidence of migratory routes and timing of these animals, the researchers concluded. The range of the Pacific Bluefin Tuna Such information would complement other migratory tracking tools and be useful for management and conservation of key fisheries and possibly other endangered species. The findings also demonstrate the interconnectedness of distant eco-regions, where events in one can be linked to findings in another region, even thousands of miles away. By the time these fish arrived in California, the artificial radioactivity levels in these fish were more than twenty times lower than the Japanese safety limit and over thirty times lower than the naturally occurringpotassium-40, another gamma-emitting radioisotope which is present in all marine biota. "While the radioactivity levels in bluefin tuna caught in California in August 2011 were only about 3 percent above the natural background radioactivity, levels in this year's bluefin may be higher, given that they would have been exposed to radioactive food and water for about one year prior to migration, unlike in 2011 when they were exposed for only about one month,” Dr. Fisher said. “However, radiocesium concentrations have become diluted and dispersed since the disaster occurred, and so the public health aspects will remain unclear until this year's tuna are analyzed. We are now preparing to do that." "We were surprised to find this radioactivity in all bluefin tested, but we were also surprised that, to our knowledge, no other animals far from Japan have been tested,” added Madigan. “From a terrible event, we have found what should prove to be a very useful tool to examine migratory patterns of Pacific bluefin tuna and many other important species in the Pacific Ocean. These also provide a clear example of nature simply being amazing. Radiocesium made it to California not by wind or ocean currents, but packaged in the muscle of a fish species that swims across the biggest ocean on the planet.” ### Stony Brook University 2012
In the United States , tobacco is often fertilized with the mineral apatite , which partially starves the plant of nitrogen , to produce a more desired flavor. Apatite, however, contains radium , lead 210, and polonium 210—which are known radioactive carcinogens . Apatite is occasionally found to contain significant amounts of rare earth elements and can be used as an ore for those metals. This is preferable to traditional rare earth ores, as apatite is non-radioactive and does not pose an environmental hazard in mine tailings . Except some apatite in Florida used to produce phosphate for U.S. tobacco crops contains uranium, radium, lead 210 and polonium 210 and radon.
Effect of pressure on the decay rate of 7 Be Earth and Planetary Science Letters Volume 180, Issues 1–2 , 30 July 2000, Pages 163–167 Abstract Beryllium-7 in Be(OH) 2 gel was compressed in diamond-anvil pressure cells up to 442 kbar at room temperature. By counting the activity of 7 Be, the decay rate for the conversion of 7 Be to 7 Li via electron capture was measured. The decay constant of 7 Be, λ , was found to increase, but the rate of increase decreased with increasing pressure. A quadratic regression of the data yields ( λ − λ 0 )/ λ 0 =(4.87×10 −5 ) P −(5.9×10 −8 ) P 2 , where the subscript zero denotes zero pressure and P stands for pressure in kilobar. Thus, λ of 7 Be increases by about 1% at 400 kbar. The observed data set can be rationalized by an increase in electron density near the nucleus of 7 Be at high pressures. This result may bear some implications for the conversion of 40 K to 40 Ar, which has been widely adopted to date geological events. Sometimes, scientists are lucky and find the right compound quickly. More often, Gruen says, hundreds or even thousands must be tested. Phase I trials are the first stage of testing in human subjects. Normally, a small (20-100) group of healthy volunteers will be selected. This phase includes trials designed to assess the safety (pharmacovigilance), tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of a drug. These trials are often conducted in an inpatient clinic, where the subject can be observed by full-time staff. The subject who receives the drug is usually observed until several half-lives of the drug have passed. Phase I trials also normally include dose-ranging, Phase 4, Studies performed after a drug is approved for marketing. The studies are performed to determine the incidence of adverse reactions; to determine the long-term effect of a drug; to study a patient population not previously studied; and for marketing comparisons against other products and other uses. Clinical trials are conducted in phases. The trials at each phase have a different purpose and help scientists answer different questions: In Phase I trials , researchers test an experimental drug or treatment in a small group of people (20-80) for the first time to evaluate its safety, determine a safe dosage range, and identify side effects. In Phase II trials , the experimental study drug or treatment is given to a larger group of people (100-300) to see if it is effective and to further evaluate its safety. In Phase III trials , the experimental study drug or treatment is given to large groups of people (1,000-3,000) to confirm its effectiveness, monitor side effects, compare it to commonly used treatments, and collect information that will allow the experimental drug or treatment to be used safely. In Phase IV trials , post marketing studies delineate additional information including the drug's risks, benefits, and optimal use.
我不相信那句话“Nothing is impossible”,只有没知识的人才会说Nothing is impossible。 最近一期《 Journal of the American Medical Association 》上一个研究显示,手机天线附近的大脑部位受到手机辐射影响,会多消耗一些能量“brain regions near a phone's antenna use 7 percent more energy than normal”(1)。 1.
