Declining water quality has become a global issue of significant concern as anthropogenic activities expand and climate change threatens to cause major alterations to the hydrological cycle. Thus, monitoring the physical, chemical, and biological status of those waters are immensely important. Remote sensing has the potential to provide an invaluable complementary source of data at local to global scales. However, accurate, cost effective, frequent, and synoptic retrieval algorithms of in-water optical and biogeochemical parameters, as well as information on the biophysical properties have several challenges. A Special Issue focusing on “water optics and remote sensing” is specifically aimed at addressing: (1) issues on water optics including characterizing optical properties among rivers, reservoirs, lakes, coastal waters, and open sea, modeling the relationships between apparent optical properties (AOPs) and inherent optical properties (IOPs); and (2) challenges on retrieval algorithm developments, validation, and applications of remote sensing of rivers, reservoirs, lakes, coastal waters, and open ocean. Obviously, this Special Issue will be helpful to update the recent progress in this rapidly growing research area. The topics, examined at local, regional, or global scales, may include, but are not limited to, the following: Characterizing bio-optical properties of river, reservoir, lake, coastal and oceanic waters; Exploring the relationships between bio-optical properties and biogeochemical parameters; Development and validation of atmospheric correction algorithms; Model calibration and validation of optical and biogeochemical parameters; Mapping optical and water colour parameters from satellite and airborne data; The Special Issue will consider invited contributed papers in response to an open call for papers. Are you ready to give a talk via webcast?

Backgrou nd: Last summer, I tried to listen to some presentations at NCAR via webcast. I found it unsatisfying, mainly because of two things: 1) The ppt slides were not very clear, especially when a slide had multi-panels. 2) The labels for some figures were too small (so I couldn’t tell which variable was shown along the x-axis, or the y-axis, not to mention its values or units). So, before the webcast for the CESM Ocean Model Working Group Meeting on Jan. 22-23, 2013, I emailed the CESM office with my suggestions for improvement. Well, the office didn’t think much of them. To my surprise, the quality of this webcast was pretty good (except for a tech glitch at the beginning, which didn’t bother me because I was still in my deep-sleep cycle due to 3-hour time difference and the fact tat there was no reminder one day before the meeting). The full screen is like a wide-screen movie. The 1/3 space on the left is split into upper (for the speaker) and lower (for the meeting’s info) halves, and the rest is used for showing the ppt. (Some speaker never moved his head once for the entire 15-min talk, the same turned head looking at the ppt screen to his left. Ouch!) The decent webcast quality motivated me to get up at 5:30 am today, joining other 40 or so colleagues to tune in remotely. Considering soon or later, we will be giving a talk to remote audience, which the SciNet will start in 2-3 days, I thought I will share some thoughts with you so at least you know how a (picky) remote audience wants. 1) Make each slide is clear, including using large fonts for writing (I would go for font size 28, but no smaller than 24) and for labels (you want people to see the variable names and their values and units). 2) Use as few (side by side) panels as possible. Do not use thumbnail size (unless the main feature is highlight and easy to be glanced at). 3) Do not show a table with 18 parameters, because you can’t expect people to read it afar. (What you could do is to highlight a few parameters and make the rest “nearly invisible” to make a point of how hard you have worked.) 4) Make sure your ppt is compatible, especially when you have an embedded movie. (Some Mac user had trouble playing a movie on a PC. Sounds familiar? It happens too often.) 5) If your pointer cannot be seen by remote viewers, use words to describe which panel you are referring to: “Notice the red curve in the left panel; it shows global-mean surface temperature over 100 years. " Of course , more of all, I want to hear a good story. H appy webca sting!

Progresses on microwave remote sensing of land surface parameters Abstract: Highly accurate observations at various scales on the land surface are urgently needed for the studies of many areas, such as hydrology, meteorology, and agriculture. With the rapid development of remote sensing techniques, remote sensing has had the capacity of monitoring many factors of the Earth’s land surface. Especially, the space-borne microwave remote sensing systems have been widely used in the quantitative monitoring of global snow, soil moisture, and vegetation parameters with their all-weather, all-time observation capabilities and their sensitivities to the characteristics of land surface factors. Based on the electromagnetic theories and microwave radiative transfer equations, researchers have achieved great successes in the microwave remote sensing studies for different sensors in recent years. This article has systematically reviewed the progresses on five research areas including microwave theoretical modeling, microwave inversion on soil moisture, snow, vegetation and land surface temperatures. The Monitoring Analysis for the Drought in China by Using an Improved MPI Method Abstract : MPI (microwave polarization index) method can use different frequencies at vertical polarization to retrieve soil moisture from TMI (tropical microwave imager) data, which is mainly suitable for bare soil. This paper makes an improvement for MPI method which makes it suitable for surface covered by vegetation. The MPI by using single frequency at different polarizations is used to discriminate the bare soil and vegetation which overcomes the difficulty in previous algorithms by using optical remote sensing data, and then the revision is made according to the different land surface types. The validation by using ground measurement data indicates that revision for different land surface types can improve the retrieval accuracy. The average error is about 24.5% by using the ground truth data obtained from ground observation stations, and the retrieval error is about 13.7% after making a revision by using ground measurement data from local observation stations for different surface types. The improved MPI method and precipitation are used to analyze the drought in Southwest China, and the analysis indicates the soil moisture retrieved by improved MPI method can be used to monitor the drought.
