Our method uses metamorphic relations to check software output for erroneous input in the absence of a tangible test oracle. We use this technique to test two major citation database systems: Scopus and the Web of Science. We report a surprising finding that the inclusion of hyphens in paper titles impedes citation counts, and that this is a result of the lack of robustness of the citation database systems in handling hyphenated paper titles. Our results are valid for the entire literature as well as for individual fields such as chemistry. We further find a strong and significant negative correlation between the journal impact factor (JIF) of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE) and the percentage of hyphenated paper titles published in TSE. Similar results are found for ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology. A software engineering field-wide study reveals that the higher JIF-ranked journals are publishing a lower percentage of papers with hyphenated titles. Our results challenge the common belief that citation counts and JIFs are reliable measures of the impact of papers and journals, as they can be distorted simply by the presence of hyphens in paper titles.

The 14.8-billion bp DNA sequence was generated over 9 months from 27,271,853 high-quality sequence reads (5.11-fold coverage of the genome) from both ends of plasmid clones made from the DNA of five individuals. Two assembly strategies—a whole-genome assembly and a regional chromosome assembly—were used, each combining sequence data from Celera and the publicly funded genome effort. The public data were shredded into 550-bp segments to create a 2.9-fold coverage of those genome regions that had been sequenced, without including biases inherent in the cloning and assembly procedure used by the publicly funded group. This brought the effective coverage in the assemblies to eightfold, reducing the number and size of gaps in the final assembly over what would be obtained with 5.11-fold coverage. Analysis of the genome sequence revealed 26,588 protein-encoding transcripts for which there was strong corroborating evidence and an additional ∼12,000 computationally derived genes with mouse matches or other weak supporting evidence. Although gene-dense clusters are obvious, almost half the genes are dispersed in low G+C sequence separated by large tracts of apparently noncoding sequence. The higher order functional information is stored in the PATHWAY database, which contains graphical representations of cellular processes, such as metabolism, membrane transport, signal transduction and cell cycle. The PATHWAY database is supplemented by a set of ortholog group tables for the information about conserved subpathways (pathway motifs), which are often encoded by positionally coupled genes on the chromosome and which are especially useful in predicting gene functions. A third database in KEGG is LIGAND for the information about chemical compounds, enzyme molecules and enzymatic reactions. Here we report the analysis of the genomic sequence of Arabidopsis. The sequenced regions cover 115.4 megabases of the 125-megabase genome and extend into centromeric regions. The evolution of Arabidopsis involved a whole-genome duplication, followed by subsequent gene loss and extensive local gene duplications, giving rise to a dynamic genome enriched by lateral gene transfer from a cyanobacterial-like ancestor of the plastid. The genome contains 25,498 genes encoding proteins from 11,000 families, similar to the functional diversity of Drosophila and Caenorhabditis elegans - the other sequenced multicellular eukaryotes. Arabidopsis has many families of new proteins but also lacks several common protein families, indicating that the sets of common proteins have undergone differential expansion and contraction in the three multicellular eukaryotes. 科学奇闻:一项研究 能 发33篇论文 诸平 我们经常听到有些人为了充数,将一项研究结果分成若干个小问题分别发表,但充其量也就是3-4篇而已。这种论文发表方式被称之为“萨拉米出版( Salami publication )”或者“香肠论文( salami slicing )”而据《发现者》( Discover ) 杂志网站2018年3月3日报道,《伊朗医学档案》( Archives of Iranian Medicine )将一项伊朗人心理健康方面的研究结果分成33篇论文分别发表,其目的可能与试图提高引用频次有关,而且作者之一是该杂志的副主编,在所有论文的致谢中都提到该杂志主编,看来如此切香肠式多篇发表主编和副主编知晓或者直接参与其中。另外,33篇论文中有31篇是同一天发表的。更多信息请浏览原文: Scientific Salami Slicing: 33 Papers from 1 Study By Neuroskeptic | March 3, 2018 5:49 am “ Salami slicing ” refers to the practice of breaking scientific studies down into small chunks and publishing each part as a seperate paper. Given that scientists are judged in large part by the number of peer-reviewed papers they produce, it’s easy to understand the temptation to engage in salami publication. It’s officialy discouraged , but it’s still very common to see researchers writing perhaps 3 or 4 papers based on a single project that could, realistically, have been one big paper. But I’ve just come across a salami that’s been sliced up so thinly that it’s just absurd. The journal Archives of Iranian Medicine just published a set of 33 papers about one study. PMID: 28287805 Free Article Similar articles Yes, a single survey of the mental health of the Iranian population has been published 33 times. 31 of these papers (all published on the same day) are devoted to the Iranian provinces – there are 31 provinces of Iran , and each province got its own paper listing the results from that area. The author lists are more or less identical every time. This degree of slicing is not standard practice when publishing national epidemiological statistics, for obvious reasons. For one thing, it will make it difficult for readers to compare rates of disease across different provinces. They’d need to consult all 31 papers. Then they would need 31 citations to refer to all of those papers if they publish the comparison. It’s just not practical. Writing the 31 provincal papers would also have been a huge amount of work for the authors, although they seem to have cut some corners here, because the papers contain a lot of overlapping text . I guess however you slice a sausage, all the pieces contain the same meat. Here’s a sample of the overlap: As well as the 31 province papers, there are 2 other Archives of Iranian Medicine papers that sum up the whole mental health survey ( 1 , 2 ). One or two summary papers like this are what you’d expect to see from a study of this kind. The provincal data would usually be included in these papers as a supplementary material. Oh, and one of the summary papers has already been cited 34 times – guess where 33 of those citations come from? So why did Archives of Iranian Medicine allow this? On Twitter, it was spotted that one of the authors is an associate editor at the journal , which may be relevant. The Editor-in-Chief of Archives of Iranian Medicine is not listed as an author, but he is thanked in all of the papers for his “comprehensive support” of the project. Overall, this is the worst case of salami slicing – or sosis slicing – I’ve ever seen.

DOI: 10.1126/science.342.6162.1035 ) , 此报道中外媒体都非常关注,同一天, Bob Yirka 在物理学家组织网( Phys.org )就发表了“ Investigationreveals black market in China for research paper authoring ”,中文媒体相关报道就更不用说了。对于目前这种混乱局面,应该说影响因素较多,所谓的量化评价将数量指标作为一个重要指标, SCI 被异化到完全背离创始人初衷的泥潭,评职称、拿课题、得奖金, …… 样样离不开“核心期刊”、 SCI 、 EI 论文,这样有错吗?不能说没有。因为有些被歪曲了、被误解了。利益驱动是促生论文发表黑市的催化剂,这样的一个黑色链条,不仅会对国内学术生态环境带来恶劣影响,对我国在全世界学术界造成的坏影响更是难以估量,使我们的研究诚信度大打折扣。需要我们及时行动起来,进行清理铲除,净化学术生态环境。重新认识我们以往的科研评价体系中存在的问题和不足,在总结经验教训的基础上,重建更科学、更完善、更合理的评价新体系迫在眉睫。 下面以我国(包括台湾、香港)研究机构或者高等学校为单位,通过微软学术搜索( Microsoft Academicresearch ),主要是对化学以及相关学科研究发表论文在 1000 篇以上,累计被引在 6500 次以上的 100 家机构进行统计分析,发表论文数量最多的是中国科学院,共计发表论文 81377 篇,其次是浙江大学发表论文总数为 21233 篇,北京大学名列第三( 15270 篇),南京大学( 14357 篇)和四川大学( 14312 篇)分布位于第四和第五名。台北医科大学是 top100 中唯一一家发布论文数量不足 1000 篇的机构(发布论文数量只有 826 篇)。 如果对 top100 按照被引总数进行排序,中国科学院名列第一,被引 364645 次;浙江大学名列第二,被引 94449 次;第三名是清华大学( 85362 次),北京大学名列第四( 71691 次),上海交通大学名列第五( 68346 次)。 但是平均被引排序结果大大超出预料,上述排名领先的机构中除了上海交通大学排名后退了十余名之外,其他机构均后退了数十名。特别是在 20 世纪 80 年代就开始最早引入 SCI 评价的南京大学,论文总数排名第四,平均被引可以说是名落孙山,在 60 名之后。平均被引频次前 10 中,台湾占 6 家机构,香港和大陆地区各占 2 家。 我们的 top100, 共计有 584041 篇论文,累计被引 2658130 次,平均被引 4.551 次 / 篇。 南京大学 平均被引不足 4.3 次 / 篇,低于 TOP100 的平均值( 4.551 次 / 篇 ),在 TOP100 中排名为第 61 位。 台北医科大学名列第一,平均被引 9.361 次 / 篇;台湾阳明大学排名第二,平均被引 7.418 次 / 篇;排名第三的是香港科技大学,平均被引 7.396 次 / 篇;第四名是长庚纪念医院(平均被引 6.826 次 / 篇),哈尔滨医科大学排名第五,平均被引 6.527 次 / 篇。论文数量排名第一的中国科学院,平均被引 4.481 次 / 篇,排名第 49 ;论文数量排名第二的浙江大学,平均被引 4.448 次 / 篇,排名第 50 ;清华大学平均被引 4.990 次 / 篇,排名第 27 ;北京大学平均被引 4.695 次 / 篇,排名第 38 ;四川大学平均被引 4.318 次 / 篇,排名第 57 ;上海交通大学平均被引 5.337 次 / 篇,排名第 17 ;中国农业科学院,平均被引 6.007 次 / 篇,排名第 8 ;而微软学术搜索化学领域的第一是美国国家卫生研究院 ( NIH ) ,论文数量为 33019 篇,累计被引 476544 次,平均被引 14.432 次 / 篇;第二是 哈佛大学论文数量为 28498 篇 ,累计被引 376778 次,平均被引 13.221 次 / 篇。相比之下,我们的平均被引还是低啊,大约只有人家的 1/3 左右, 我们的评价应该看重什么?是论文数量?是总引数?还是平均被引数?还是IF?还是H指数?还是单篇被引数?难道说不值得反思吗? 因为引用问题,66种期刊IF2年之后再谈 诸平 据 The Scientist 杂志网站 2013 年 6 月 21 日 报道,因为自引等而导致期刊被引频次出现畸形,汤森路透( Thomson Reuters ) 在 2013 年发布的来自世界 83 个国家和地区的上万中期刊的影响因子(IF)一览表中,将有 66 种期刊被淘汰出局(详见 http://blog.sciencenet.cn/home.php?mod=spaceuid=212210do=blogquickforward=1id=702107 ),禁止公布统计评价结果,其中包括 37 种期刊是首次出现引用作弊问题的期刊。 理由是排斥包括过度自和 “ 引文堆积 ” ,这些都是在某些期刊中彼此之间相互过度引用( “ 友情引用 ” )。这些非正常引用使得引用排名发生扭曲,因此,汤森路透在 2 年之后才会重新考虑这些禁止排除的期刊。不过这些期刊在 汤森路透期刊影响因子年报期刊总数( 10853 种)中所占比例很少,大约在 0.61% 左右 。 10853 种期刊中 有 379 种期刊 , 是首次出现在影响因子年报一览表之列。 虽然一些期刊对于引文排名非常重视 , 但是也有些期刊 已经淡化了影响因子的重要性。 2013 年 5 月由一群科学编辑和出版商发布的旧金山研究评估宣言( San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment , DORA )中 , 宣称影响因子不适合用于判断单个期刊的价值,也不适合用来评价个体科学家。 生物学家 George Lozano 最近对 20 世纪 2900 万篇论文的引文进行了分析 , 2012年6 月 8 日在伦敦经济学院( June 8 blog post for the London School of Economics )的博客上对其分析结果进行公开,暴露出影响因子有效性方面的许多漏洞,他在博文中写道, “ 在顶级论文之间 , 没有 在顶级期刊上发表的论文比例不断减少 , 但现在却越来越多。 因此 , 最好的论文 ( 即被引频次最高的论文 ) 现在来自日益多样化的期刊源 , 而 不一定就是高影响因子的期刊。 ”详见: Lozano, G. Science杂志发表论文(见附件)——China Looks to Purge Academia of 'Trash Journals'( 中国要清除学界的“垃圾期刊 ”) ,这种举措能否换来中国作者论文的高引,二者之间是否存在必然联系暂且不论。根据Elsevier的Scopus数据库统计, 2006-2010年中国发表的论文总数仅次于美国,居世界第2位,中国所发表论文的篇均被引次数只有1.47,美国为5.16。中国大量的研究机构都鼓励科研人员在国外高影响因子期刊发表论文,Guangzhou Medical University对在影响因子达到15的期刊上发表论文的主要作者给予30万元的奖励。这种现象的出现,正好反映出我们的评价概念有问题,而不是期刊本身的问题。学界的“垃圾期刊”需要清楚,以交流为主的期刊也没有必有再浪费人财物,改革仅仅出版电子版(网络版),这些改革必将会对中国期刊事业的发展产生积极的推动作用。 同时更应该注意的是我们的评价观念需要转变,我们摆脱了唯成分论之后,目前又陷入了“以刊论文”的怪圈。“核心期刊”、“SCI期刊”、“EI期刊”、“高影响因子期刊”等等,使唯量化的管理者看到了论文数量的大跃进,但是质量的提高却赶不上数量的飞跃,是导致篇均被引频次偏低的必然结果。如果评价观念依然按照目前的既定方针办,就是清理了中国学界“垃圾期刊”,也未必能够带来中国高引的新局面。 在高影响因子的期刊上发表的论文,就一定可以获得高引吗?答案是不确定的。高影响因子是对于某一期刊整体而言的篇均评价指标,用其来评价每一篇论文未必适合,也未必科学。高影响因子的期刊只能对于发表的论文带来高引的可能性,但是否会被高引关键不在于期刊,而在于论文自身的学术价值,任何一种期刊的被引文献比例都不可能达到100%,就是被引了频次也有多少之别。我们怎么能够“以刊论文”呢?! 看看2011年SJR最高之刊——Laser Physics Letters(SJR=63.545),其被引文献和未被引文献比例 1981-2011年年底,Web of Science数据库累计收录宝鸡作者论文574篇,其中涉及到770多位作者,但是收录量在35篇以上的作者只有5人,对其中4位“高引作者”进行统计结果显示,论文的来源期刊有37种,对于每一位作者发表的论文进行篇均年均被引频次计算,再与其发表论文的期刊的相应年度的SJR值进行平均之后,得到如下图示。 由上图可以看出高影响因子的期刊发表的论文被引频次为零,而相对较低的影响因子的期刊发表的论文却获得了较高的被引频次。这种现象不是个案,而是一个普遍性的现象。面对现实,提高中国作者论文的被引频次,清理“垃圾期刊”是必要地,但是改变评价观念可能更为重要。 Science-Chinese-journals-2011-Oct.pdf
