喜闻Donald E.Knuth得片柳奖（100630） 闵应骅 从CACM 2010年3月号上得知Doniad E.Knuth (高德纳), 荣获2009年Katayanagi Prize（片柳奖），谨此祝贺。 片柳奖是由美国卡内基梅伦大学（CMU）和东京工科大学（TUT）共同设置，从2007年开始，每年奖励一位计算机科学研究的杰出科学家，由正式提名后经CMU和TUT组成的评审委员会评出。第一年就给了UC Berkeley的David A. Patterson，他是大家熟知的体系结构专家。片柳先生已经90高龄，是他创建了东京工科大学，一直热衷于教育事业，他本人还在建筑方面很有建树。 Doniad E.Knuth是斯坦福大学名誉退休教授，著名的理论计算机科学家，1974年图灵奖获得者。他的著作The Art of Computer Programming已经出了4卷，计划2015年出第5卷。该书由苏运霖教授等译成中文计算机程序设计艺术。Knuth现在已经接近80高龄，仍然在科学领域耕耘，计划5年后出第5卷。真是老当益壮，为科学献身。佩服，佩服！ 我和Knuth教授打交道是在1999年。那时，我应李国杰所长之邀，担任《 JOURNAL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY》(《计算机科学与技术（英）》，JCST)执行主编(2000-2003)。在众多院士和编委的支持下，趁IFIP世界计算机大会于2000年8月在北京召开的机会，召开了一个所谓JCST Evening的晚餐会，有上百外国人参加。我顺访了在美国费城的ISI（科学信息研究所）总部汇报JCST情况，请多位国外专家给ISI写推荐信，其中就有Donald E. Knuth。他一直是JCST的编委和读者。他欣然接受我的要求，在写给ISI的信中说（大意）：我很惊讶SCI为什么没有收录JCST。JCST是中国唯一一本计算机科学方面的英文学术杂志。我每期都看。果然，2000年9月ISI给我和李国杰来信，告知JCST已经被Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)收录了。这对JCST是很关键的一步，因为中国的计算机杂志只有JCST第一个被收录，而那时国内对SCI收录的文章，可以说是另眼相看的。那时，评奖、评院士、评杰出青年都要参照SCI的文章及其引用次数。此后，我又收到过他的多次讲演稿。看得出来，他一直在辛勤耕耘，为计算机科学做贡献。 在大力挖掘青年科学家智慧和研究活力的同时，我也希望老专家们振奋精神，继续为科学做力所能及的贡献。其实，做学问本来是不分年青、年老的。

His warmth, candor and interest in others can disguise the fact that he's one of our nation's most talented and popular artists. A fifth generation artist, Zolan began drawing at age three, and, by age five, was working in watercolors and winning local competitions. He won his first major art competition at age thirteen and was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. By sixteen, he won a scholarship to Chicago's American Academy of Art. Full-time formal training began after high school with a full scholarship to the American Academy of Fine Art. Communicationsofthe ACM在最近的两期里（#7and#8）刊出了对斯坦福大学计算机系教授DonaldKnuth的访谈。这位斯坦福大学的大牌教授，可是为数不多的几个能文能武的教授之一。说他能文，他写的《TheArtofComputerProgramming》一书是计算机界的经典著作，这本巨著上世纪70年代出版了三卷，第四卷从1973年一直写到现在尚未全部脱稿。说他能武，他是TeX软件包的作者，如果你正在用LaTex写论文，那你或许知道这套系统就是源自于他之手。 有人称他为世上最伟大的程序员，他对此颇为得意。他这样说道：...在斯坦福，我们教学生如何写程序，但除了写几个给教科书用的例子外，我们自己却从来没有写过真正意义上的程序。这就是我们，所谓的正教授，一面告诉人们该怎么怎么去做，另一面却除了端端花架子之外，自己什么也没干过。一想到自己亲自写一个真正的大程序，我就手痒痒的不行。 原文如下： At Stanford we were teaching students how to write programs, but we had never really written more than textbook code ourselves in this style.
