Von der Zweckmäßigkeit überhaupt On Purposiveness in General / Finality in general / 牟宗三 :§10 合目的性一般 让我们以超越的词语 ( 即不预设任何经验的东西如快乐之情之类者 ) 来界定 “ 目的 ” 之意义。 P: What is a purpose? If we try to explicate it in terms of its transcendental attributes (without presupposing anything empirical, such as the feeling of pleasure), then a purpose is the object of a concept insofar as we regard this concept as the object's cause (the real basis of its possibility); and the causality that a concept has with regard to its object is purposiveness (forma finalis- Purposive form ). P: Hence we think of a purpose if we think not merely, say, of our cognition of the object, but instead of the object itself (its form, or its existence), as an effect that is possible only through a concept of that effect. In that case the presentation of the effect is the basis that determines the effect's cause and precedes it. M Let us define the meaning of “an end” in transcendental terms (i.e., without presupposing anything empirical, such as the feeling of pleasure). An end is the object of a concept so far as this concept is regarded as the cause of the object (the real ground of its possibility); and the causality of a concept i n respect of its object is finality ( forma finalis ) . Where, then, not the cognition of an object merely, but the object itself (its form or real existence) as an effect, is thought to be possible only through a concept of it, there we imagine an end. The representation of the effect is here the determining ground of its cause and takes the lead of it. M: The consciousness of the causality of a representation in respect of the state of the subject as one tending to preserve a continuance of that state, may here be said to denote in a general way what is called pleasure; whereas displeasure is that representation which contains the ground for converting the state of the representations into their opposite (for hindering or removing them). P: Consciousness of a presentation's causality directed at the subject's state so as to keep him in that state, may here designate generally what we call pleasure; whereas displeasure is that presentation which contains the basis that determines the state presentations into their own opposite (i.e., to keep them away or remove them). P: The power of desire, insofar as it can be determined to act only by concepts, i.e., in conformity with the presentation of a purpose, would be the will. On the other hand, we do call objects, states of mind, or acts purposive even if their possibility does not necessarily presuppose the presentation of a purpose; we do this merely because we can explain and grasp them only if we assume that they are based on a causality according to purposes, i.e., on a will that would have so arranged them in accordance with the presentation of a certain rule. M: The faculty of desire, so far as determinable only through concepts, i.e., so as to act in conformity with the representation of an end, would be the will. But an object, or state of mind, or even an action may, although its possibility does not necessarily presuppose the representation of an end, be called final s imply on account of its possibility being only explicable and intelligible for us by virtue of an assumption on our part of fundamental causality according to ends, i.e., a will that would have so ordained it according to a certain represented rule. Finality, therefore, may exist apart from an end, in so far as we do not locate the causes of this form in a will, but yet are able to render the explanation of its possibility intelligible to ourselves only by deriving it from a will. Now we are not always obliged to look with the eye of reason into what we observe (i.e., to consider it in its possibility). So we may at least observe a finality of form, and trace it in objects—though by reflection only— without resting it on an end (as the material of the nexus finalis ). Hence there can be purposiveness without a purpose, insofar as we do not posit the causes of this form in a will, and yet can grasp the explanation of its possibility only by deriving it f rom a will. Now what we observe we do not always need to have insight into by reason (as to how it is possible). Hence we can at least observe a purposiveness as to form and take note of it in objects even if only by reflection--without basing it on a purpose (as the matter of the nexus finalis ) z The sole foundation of the judgement of taste is the FORM OF FINALITY of an object (or mode of representing it) 鉴赏判断的唯一基础是客体的终结形式(或它的表象模式) //P : A Judgment of Taste Is Based on Nothing but the Form of Purposiveness of an Object (or of the Way of Presenting It)
Ⅴ . The principle of the formal purposiveness of nature is a transcendental principle of judgment D A transcendental principle is one by which we think the universal a priori condition under which alone things can become objects of our cognition in general; on the other hand, a principle is called metaphysical if it is one which think the a priori condition under which alone objects whose concept must be given empirically can be further determined a priori. Thus the principle by which we cognize bodies as substances and as changeable substances is transcendental if it says that a change in them must have a cause; but it is metaphysical if it says that a change in them must have an external cause. For in order for us t o cognize the proposition a priori in the first case, we must think the body only through ontological predicate s (pure concepts of the understanding), e.g., as a substance; but in the second case we must base the proposition on the empirical concept of a body (as a movable thing in space), after which we can, however, see completely a priori that the latter predicate (of motion that must have an external cause) applies to the body. According ly, as I will show in a moment, the principle of the purposiveness of nature (in the diversity of its empirical laws) is a transcendental principle. For the concept of objects , insofar as they are thought as subject to this principle, is only the pure concept of objects of possible empirical cognition in general and contains nothing empirical. On the other hand, the principle of practical purposiveness, the purposiveness that must be thought in the idea of the determination of a free will , is a metaphysical principle, because the concept of a power of desire, considered as a will, does have to be given empirically (i.e., it does not belong to the transcendental predicates). Still, both principles are a priori rather than empirical, because in such judgments we need no further experience in order to connect the predicate with the empirical concept of the subject , but can see this connection completely a priori . That the concept of a purposiveness of nature belongs to the transcendental principles is sufficiently evident from the maxims of judgment which we use as an a priori basis for our investigation of nature but which yet concern no more than the possibility of experience and hence of our cognition of nature, though not merely of nature as such but of nature as determined by a diversity of particular laws. These maxims occur only sporadically 偶发地零星地 but fairly frequently in the course of the science of metaphysics, as pronouncements of its wisdom, when it formulates certain rules whose necessity cannot be established from concepts: Nature takes the shortest way (lex parsimoniae); yet it makes no leap, either in the sequence of its changes or in the juxtaposition of forms that differ in kind (lex continui in natura); its great diversity in empirical laws is nonetheless a unity under few principles (principia praeter necessitatem non sunt multiplicanda ), and so forth. If we try to indicate the origin of these principles by following the psychological route, then we go wholly against their meaning. For they do not say what happens, i.e., by what rule our cognitive powers actually play their role , and how we judge: they rather say how we ought to judge; and if these principles are merely empirical, they cannot yield this logical objective necessity. Hence the purposiveness of nature for our cognitive powers and their use, which manifestly shines forth from these principles, is a transcendental principle of judgments; and hence it too requires a transcendental deduction , by means of which we must try to find the basis for such judging in the a priori sources of cognition. P But apart from that formal temporal condition, objects of empirical cognition are still determined , or--if we confine ourselves to what we can judge a priori-- determinable, in all sorts of additional ways. Therefore, specifically different natures, apart from what they have in common as belonging to nature as such, can still be causes in an infinite diversity of additional ways; and each of these ways must (in accordance with the concept of a cause as such) have its rule, a rule that is a law and hence carries necessity with it, Respectively, the principle of parsimony, the principle of continuity in nature, and (the principle that) principles must not be multiplied beyond necessity. M But besides this formal time-condition, the objects of empirical cognition are determined, or, so far as we can judge a priori , are determinable, in divers ways, so that specifically differentiated natures, over and above what they have in common as things of nature in general, are further capable of being causes in an infinite variety of ways; 但是,除了这种形式的时间条件外,经验认知的对象是被规定的,或者,就我们所能先天地判断而言,是以不同的方式规定的,因此, 特殊地区 分 开来的诸自然物 ,在它们作为一般的自然事物的共同点之上,更进一步能够以无限的方式成为原因; and each of these modes must, on the concept of a cause in general, have its rule, which is a law, and, consequently, imports 意味着 necessity: although owing to the constitution and limitations of our faculties of cognition we may entirely fail to see this necessity.
Kant, Immanuel. Critick of Pure Reason. Second edition with notes and explanation of Terms. Translated by Francis Haywood . And it is a call to reason to take on once again the most difficult of all its tasks … ( Werner S. Pluhar 英译 ) 在这儿, it 显然与前面的 it 对应(尽管样子像形式主语,等于后面的 to take on… )。 It is obviously the effect not of levity but of the matured judgment of the age, which refuses to be any longer put off with illusory knowledge. It is a call to reason to undertake anew the most difficult of all its tasks, namely, that of self-knowledge … It is plainly not the effect of the levity, but of the matured judgement of the age, which refuses to be any longer entertained with illusory knowledge, It is, in fact, a call to reason, again to undertake the most laborious of all tasks—that of self-examination, and to establish a tribunal….
