Markedly elevated formaldehyde in the cecum of APP/PS1 mouse Liu Kai-li 1 He Ying-ge 1 Yu Le-xiang 1 CHEN Yao 1,2 He Rong-qiao 1* (1. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is considered beingrelated with the microbiota in the intestines. Concentrations of endogenous formaldehyde are positively correlated to the cognitive impairment of AD in patients. Therefore, we compared the concentration of intestinal formaldehyde between APP/PS1 and C57BL/6J mice Take different sections of duodenum, small intestine, cecum, and colon of APP/PS1 transgenic mice (n=8) and those of C57BL/6J wildtype mice (n=9), respectively. Measure the concentrations of formaldehyde in the digestion contents and intestinal walls with HPLC coupled with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) absorptions. Thelevels of the cecum formaldehyde in the digestion contents from APP/PS1transgenic mice were significantly ( P =0.036) higher than those from C57BL/6J wildtype mice, but no significant ( P 0.05) difference could be observed in the small intestine and colon. Formaldehyde inwalls of duodenum, cecum and colon were not significantly different except forthe small intestine. That is, the concentration of formaldehyde was observably elevated in small intestinal wall though the change approached to thesignificant ( P =0.052) different. For APP/PS1 mice, the concentration of formaldehyde in cecum either digestion content or wall exhibited the highest, compared with the other intestinal sections. Intestinal microbiota is one of the important sources producing formaldehyde. The elevated concentrations of formaldehyde in the cecum digestion contents and small intestinal wall of APP/PS1 transgenic AD mice suggested that dysmetabolism of formaldehyde in the intestinal microbiota may be related to age-relatedcognitive impairment. ******************** http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/05/10/us-retailer-halts-sales-all-laminate-flooring-made-in-china/ Lumber Liquidators has suspended the sale of all laminate flooring made in China a week after disclosing that the Justice Department is seeking criminal charges against the specialty retailer in an investigation over imported products. The flooring supplier said Thursday that it decided to suspend the sales while a board committee completes a review of its sourcing compliance program. The CBS news show 60 Minutes reported in March that the company's laminate flooring made in China contained high levels of the carcinogen formaldehyde. The company has sent thousands of air testing kits to customers since early March. It said more than 97 percent of the kits from customers with laminate flooring from China showed formaldehyde air concentrations that fell within World Health Organization guidelines. It also said its suppliers have certified and labeled the flooring as compliant with California formaldehyde standards. But Lumber Liquidators is reviewing those certification processes. Lumber Liquidators said last week that it has spent $2.3 million on its air-quality assurance program. The company also has said it has stopped buying Chinese laminate flooring for now, opting instead for products from parts of Europe and North America. Lumber Liquidators also said last week in a regulatory filing that the Justice Department is seeking charges under the Lacey Act which, among other things, bans illegally sourced wood products. The company's shares slipped 16 cents to close at $27.07 on Thursday. The stock had approached $70 per share in late February.
