1、 NON-RANDOM MIXING BETWEEN GROUPS OF PRZEWALSKIS GAZELLE AND TIBETAN GAZELLE Zhongqiu Li ab , Zhigang Jiang b Guy Beauchamp c a Key Laboratory of Animal Ecology and Conservation Biology, Institute of Zoology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China b College of Life Science, Nanjing University , Nanjing , China c Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Montral , St-Hyacinthe, Qubec , Canada The Przewalskis gazelle, Procapra przewalskii , and the Tibetan gazelle, P. picticaudata, are two endemic, closely related and endangered ungulates of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The two species often occur in mixed-species groups in the upper Buha River of the Plateau. We studied the composition and size of their mixed-species groups over two years to determine whether such groups aggregate by chance and to determine a posteriori potential costs and benefits associated with the formation of mixed-species groups. Sex composition and size distribution were very similar in single-species groups of each species and given that population density was also similar for the two species, we expected that if mixed-species groups formed by chance, mixed-species groups would consist of an equal mix of the two species. While this was true in male and in mixed-sex groups, the proportion of Przewalskis gazelles was much larger than expected in female groups. In addition, mixed-species groups in the winter never included males of the two species. The results thus suggest that random mixing can be rejected in these two gazelle species. Mixed-species groups were larger than single-species groups of each species in all-female, all-male and mixed-sex groups suggesting that one benefit of mixed-species groups is a reduction in predation risk associated with the formation of larger groups. We also suggest that the occurrence of mixed-sex, mixed-species groups implies a potentially non-trivial risk of crossbreeding, which would represent a cost to the formation of mixed-species groups.
Best wishes Lucinda Haines Editorial Office Journal of Zoology lucinda.haines@zsl.org on behalf of Prof. Nigel Bennett Editor, Journal of Zoology 10月26日发在新浪上的内容 这两天正忙着修改投到Journal of Zoology上的一篇文章-Vigilance in Przewalski's gazelle: effects of sex, predation risk and group size。
