最新消息，有31位外国科学家联名支持肖传国医生，他们对肖传国医生的学术水平和肖氏反射弧的学术价值给出了鉴定。
这是一个公开的，由国际学术界专家给出的鉴定，如果你认为这个鉴定也不足以算作学术圈的权威鉴定，那我只能说：所谓学术，在中国人的眼里，原来真的一文不值。

国际学术同仁声援肖传国医生的公开信

致所有人：
我们都有幸认识肖传国大夫多年。他是一位受国际学术界尊敬的外科医生和科学家，在恢复（脊椎损伤病人的）排尿和排便功能的神经再生研究中，他取得了重大进展。肖传国医生在美国完成了开创性的动物实验研究，阐明支配大腿的运动神经可以用来绕接支配膀胱和排便。这个绕接可以形成一个反射作用（反射弧）来启动来膀胱功能。他研究的成果已经多次发表在同行评议的国际科学期刊上。其他的科学家也已经重复并证实了肖医生的这些研究结果。
肖医生最终鼓起勇气将动物实验研究的成果转化到临床试验上，在中国的脊柱损伤和脊柱裂病人身上开展神经绕接（神经通路重建，即反射弧）手术。在中国，由于缺乏抗痉挛药物antimuscarinics和间歇性导尿术（自插导尿管），神经性膀胱功能障碍成为一种威胁生命的疾病。能缓解神经性膀胱功能障碍的并发症的疗法，就是一种能够拯救生命的成功。神经性膀胱和排大便功能障碍患者的病情是很痛苦的，包括遭受尿潴留、尿失禁、反复感染、肾功能不全、大便失禁、便秘等，生活质量极差。神经通路重建手术是一个非常复杂的手术，需要神经的再生。不应当把手术的成功定义为完全恢复排便排尿功能。这项手术的重点在于收益超过风险。
肖医生的临床研究成果发表在多种学术刊物上，并两次获得Jack Lapides佳作奖，这是奖励在神经泌尿科学界作出重要贡献的科学家的最崇高的国际性大奖之一。2008年，因为他的科学成就，肖医生还获得了国际儿童排尿节制学会颁发的Kelm Hjalmas演讲者（受邀做大会主题发言）荣誉。我们当中的许多人都曾经到中国去检视肖医生治疗过的患者的情况，观摩或者学习他发明的神经通路重建手术。肖医生是一位非常有经验的外科医生，他对患者热情照顾，不知疲倦地培训来自世界各地的医生们，来推广他的神经通路重建手术。
在美国，已经开展过一项独立而且严格的先期试验来检验这项手术的安全性和效益。术后一年的治疗结果最近发表在《泌尿科学杂志》（ Journal of Urology）上。在12个月的随访期间，在9位脊髓裂患者中，有7位患者，观察到皮下至膀胱的神经反射弧的构建成立，证明神经通路重建手术的确起了作用。这个成绩是了不起的，肖医生应该得到嘉奖。并且，一部分患者已经展现出大小便排便功能的改善，并将随时间推移而变得更好。术后36个月的成果正在分析中，不久就会发表。该先期试验的数据是支持“肖氏手术”的，现在受NIH（美国国立卫生研究院）资助的临床试验正在开展，以进一步在脊髓裂患者中研究腰椎至骶神经通路重建。还有，在肖医生的帮助和指导下，类似的临床试验也在世界范围内开展。
中国人民和政府应该为肖医生对病人所作出的贡献、对他的科学成就，和他在世界上培训医生以推广这项手术的诚意而自豪。国际科学界对肖医生被拘捕的消息感到震惊。我们这些了解肖医生的人，都对他涉入此案感到难以置信。
肖医生是一个极富同情心的绅士，他的诚实和对本学科作出的开创性的科学成就广受世界同行的尊敬。我们恳请中国政府和有关权威机构公正对待肖大夫，并在案情调查期间保障他的基本人权。在此事件中，请重视肖大夫对世界所作出的科学和人道主义事业的贡献。

补充一下。最先公布这个公开信的人是美国罗格斯大学Wise Young教授，他本人也是截瘫病人的治疗专家，现在似乎在致力于干细胞疗法。最近他已经与云南一个军队的总医院开始合作研究，进行干细胞治疗的临床实验。
在公布这个公开信时，他说了一段话，原文是：
I have been reluctant to comment on this matter in large part because there is insufficient evidence. The so-called "investigation" of Dr. Xiao's results that you describe was carried out by a lawyer who is not qualified to assess patients and apparently affiliated with Mr. Fang, a long-time critic of Dr. Xiao. Normally, in science and medicine, results are confirmed by other investigators who do similar studies to ascertain whether the results can be replicated.
To his credit, Dr. Xiao has been working very hard over the past 5 years to teach his procedure to other doctors and to encourage them to do and publish clinical trials of the Xiao method of treating bladder paralysis. The results of the first clinical trial by Dr. Peters at the Oakland University William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, was recently published in the Journal of Urology. I understand that other studies in Scandinavia will be published soon. Dr. Xiao has published his work. It is not difficult to find the studies.
I urge people to come to their own conclusions concerning the results. I do not want to impose my opinions concerning the results until people have had a chance to read the work and discuss the results. In the meantime, I attach a letter from the international academic community concerning Dr. Xiao and the news concerning his incarceration. This letter is very supportive of Dr. Xiao and has been signed by some of the most prominent urologists and scientists in the field.
