Job Description
Job Title: Seed Production & QA Manager

Department: Research-Breeding
Reports To: Mark Barineau
FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:
To plan, execute and manage all production and seed QA testing activities in support of proprietary F1 seed productions for Lipman. This position will interact directly with Operations, R&D and third-party contractors. Employee will be directly responsible for developing and implementing necessary seed production logistics and infrastructure to assure a constant supply of pure, high quality hybrid seeds and stock seeds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop a comprehensive plan to assess needs and implement reliable seed production, testing methods and infrastructure for both parental and commercial tomato materials.

Interact with Operations and Research Managers to develop accurate seed production projections, targets and attending multiplication schedules for all types of tomato seeds.

Evaluate and identify reliable third-party production and QA contractors to assure a constant supply of high quality seeds is delivered to meet targeted minimum/strategic quantities and planting deadlines.

Develop, implement and enforce effective procedures leading to maximum seed vigor and purity while maintaining maximum security. This includes genetic marker or similar data applications or other procedures.

Trouble-shoot crop or QA issues as situations, reports or data dictate to meet goals. This includes coordination and application of appropriate milling, grading or priming/pelletizing to meet basic seed performance standards.

Conduct or assist in new hybrid production testing as needed to maximize seed yields in each crop. Transfer key information to outside contractors as is prudent to enhance efficiency for all multiplications.

Plan, coordinate and train technical or seasonal staff to assure high quality, pure seed stocks are maintained in sufficient quantities at all times.

Effectively set and meet production and testing goals, timelines, and budgets.

Develop annual capital and operations budget to meet company goals.

Collect, organize, interpret, calculate, store and retrieve experimental and seed production data in secure written and computer formats. Report as directed to management.

Successful applicant must learn and adhere to all safety programs and protocols while seeking ways to improve the safety practices of his or her reports.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Employee is responsible for the supervision and direct instruction of internal reports, technicians, seasonal labor or third-party contractors. Manager will also be responsible to plan, coordinate, supervise and arrange any additional technical support personnel or training as necessary to successfully achieve all goals.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Demonstrated and comprehensive skills in commercial vegetable seed multiplication and related seed testing for health, purity and germ as well as related operations and workforce management.

M.S. or B.S. in Seed Technology, Horticulture, Agronomy or closely related field related to plant and seed production or equivalent industry experience in same.

Five or more years of hands-on experience in seed production operations with attending experience in seed QA testing and stock seed production.

Functional understanding of seed milling, processing, treatment and storage
techniques commonly used in the seed industry.

Ability to travel globally for extended periods of time to review crops.

Experience in developing and administering budgets.

Proficient in the use of a database and Microsoft Office Software including but
not limited to Excel, Outlook, Access and MS Word.

Able to effectively plan, coordinate and execute multiple operations at once and from various locations. Able to delegate and coordinate staff.

Understanding and ability to manage stock and commercial seed inventories, shipments and related import/export requirements and inspections..

Non-tobacco user in any form.

Ability to live and work in the Estero, Florida area on a permanent basis.

Language Skills:
Abilityto follow oral and written directions; read; understand; analyze; track; interpret; apply and explain complex and technical policies, procedures, codes, regulations and make recommendations. Ability to create reports, procedure manuals and data files. Ability to effectively present information in both private and public forums and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and employees. Must be fluent in the English language, both written and spoken with bilingual skills (Spanish/English or Chinese/English) preferred due to the global nature of the position.

Mathematical Skills:
Abilityto add, subtract, multiply, and divide in metric or English units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to create and interpret various types of data or graphs. Able to accurately develop and use long lists of records or numbers. Able to perform all calculations necessary to formulate production projections, targets, time lines and budgets.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Work independently while executing multiple tasks at once and make effective judgments regarding methodology or compliance issues. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to solve problems for which many times previous examples may not exist.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, fingers; handle; or feel and to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; lift and reach with hands and arms. The employee must lift up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, depth perception and no color blindness. Must possess physical stamina and strength to allow for repetitive lifting, grading, sorting and general use and transport of related equipment on a daily basis if necessary. Must be able to routinely traverse uneven terrain such as fields or pathways.

Work Environment:
The employee is required to work in a variety of environments including but not limited to, unleveled farm fields; packing houses; green houses; and office areas. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but the employee may be exposed to loud industrial equipment and machinery; moving mechanical parts and vibration when performing the various job responsibilities. The employee is exposed to variable temperatures and humid conditions on a regular basis. The employee may be regularly exposed to moving mechanical, extraction or packaging equipment and associated chemicals. Both domestic and international travel, for up to one month at a time may be required. The ability to safely drive for extended periods of time or in strange terrain may be required.

A Valid Passport is required for international travel.
