瑞典皇家科学院(The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences)属于世界著名的科学院，它是一个独立的、非政府的科学社团，成立于1739年。目前，该院设立10个学部（scientific disciplines），即：（1）数学部 【Mathematics】；（2）天文与空间学部 【Astronomy and space science】；（3）物理学部 【Physics】；（4）化学部 【Chemistry】；（5）地球科学部【Geosciences】；（6）生物科学部 【Biosciences】；（7）医学部 【Medical sciences】；（8）工程科学部 【Engineering sciences】；（9）社会科学部 【Social sciences】；（10）人文及对科学杰出服务部【Humanities and for outstanding services to science】。瑞典皇家科学院的学部设置与中国科学院有明显不同。

自1739年起，瑞典皇家科学院已遴选1,500名院士（Swedish members）（瑞典国籍）。自1745年起，已遴选1,200外籍院士（Foreign members）。如：1865年英国博物学家Charles Darwin （1809--1882）当选为瑞典皇家科学院外籍院士 [另：1839年当选为英国皇家学会院士(FRS)]。1815—1817年遴选了23名通讯院士（Corresponding members）。

目前，瑞典皇家科学院拥有420名院士（Swedish members）和175名外籍院士（Foreign members）。本期《古植物学的故事》主要罗列一份该院古植物学院士与外籍院士之名单。有些院士的当选年份需要进一步核实。

瑞典皇家科学院外籍院士[另：1902年当选英国皇家学会外籍院士(ForMemRS)]

通过了解某国科学院古植物学院士与外籍院士在科学部门上的分布或归属，我们可以看出该国科学院对古植物学的学科定位。

已故去的和仍健在的中国科学院古植物学院士都毫无例外地隶属于该科学院地球科学部。这种局面似乎反映了中国学术界存在一种传统认识，即：古植物学主要是地球科学的事情。这种观念需要更新了。也就是说，中国科学院生命科学部可以成为古植物学院士的一个遴选通道。

瑞典皇家科学院生物科学部的古植物学外籍院士Else Marie Friis是中国科学院外籍院士，但学部归属不明确。专攻化石鱼类研究的古生物学家张弥漫院士（Mee-Mann Chang）是中国科学院地球科学部的院士，她是瑞典皇家科学院生物科学部的外籍院士。]

自1863年以来，至少有17名古植物学家当选为美国科学院院士和外籍院士，其中外籍院士两名。在美国科学院的学科归类中，古植物学不是一个单独的“disciplinary section”，古植物学研究领域的院士一般会分布在“Evolutionary Biology”、“Plant Biology”、 “Geology”和“Environmental Sciences and Ecology”等“disciplinary sections”。
