Chatter stability for micromilling processes with flat end mill
Qinghua Song & Zhanqiang Liu & Zhenyu Shi

[Abstract] A mechanistic model is developed to predict micromillingforces with flat end mill for both shearing and ploughing - dominant cuttingregimes. The model assumes that there is a critical chip thickness thatdetermines whether a chip will form or not. Numerical method is extended topredict the chatter stability in micro end milling, which is performed based onthe proposed cutting force model. The simulating procedure for predictingstability and cutting forces is presented in detail, and the stability diagramis constructed. The validation experiments are conducted to verify thesimulation results. Both experimental cutting forces measured and machined workpiecesurface scanned through digital microscope are analyzed and used to verify theproposed model.
