这是爱德蒙·斯宾塞（Edmund Spenser）写下的一首著名十四行爱情诗。这首诗通过二人的对话描写了他是如何要让自己和女友的爱永存。一天,作者来到沙滩上,在沙滩上写下了女友的名字。但那名字能保留多久？此诗寓意深远。

伊名沙滩上，浪来荡无存；

再把伊名写，只痛潮来吞。

“痴人莫徒劳，凡人何永存？

吾身随此去，吾名亦无痕。”

“非也，此凡云！尘死汝将存，

吾诗汝德辉，天堂留名美。

世人难永恒，此爱将永生。”

One day I wrote her name upon the strand,
But came the waves and washed it away:
Again I wrote it with a second hand,
But came the tide, and made my pains his prey.
Vain man, said she, that dost in vain assay
A mortal thing so to immortalize!
For I myself shall like to this decay,
And eek my name be wiped out likewise.
Not so (quoth I), let baser things devise
To die in dust, but you shall live by fame:
My verse your virtues rare shall eternize,
And in the heavens write your glorious name;
Where, whenas death shall all the world subdue,
Our love shall live, and later life renew.

附：爱德蒙·斯宾塞（Edmund Spenser）生于London, England伦敦一商人家庭，1569年就读于剑桥大学，曾做过伊丽沙白女王的宠臣李斯特伯爵（Earl of Leicester）的秘书，1580年到都柏林受命为新任爱尔兰总督格雷爵士的秘书。1589年由人引见挟《仙后》诗稿晋见伊丽莎白女王，因此获每年50镑的恩俸。先后结过两次婚。1599年突然逝世，葬于西敏寺。《仙后》是斯宾塞最重要的作品，也是英诗中少数长篇诗作之一。

原诗中的strand就是sand；而eek是感叹词，有叹气‘唉’之意；quoth就是say之意；Dost在古英语中有do的含义。
