Midnight in Shanghai

No, there is nothing in common between my version of "midnight in Shanghai" and Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," except both happened at midnight.

I had a perfect plan about how to take the (cheap) shuttle from the international to domestic Shanghai airport where our hotel is, but unexpected things always happened. First, the shuttle bus driver had a horrible taste for music, or noise, and we had to suffer that for the 30-min ride across town. Then, he dropped us all off in the middle of NO WHERE. It took me 20 mins to find our way to the taxi line. Since it was dark, around midnight, we could not tell how long the taxi line was, or we would have screamed: it must have 300 people snaking back and forth under the mist (too cool the temperature). I cursed, for having to stand in such a long line to get a taxi to our hotel, after having been on the road for almost 20 hours.

All the time, I never thought even once about the midnight in Paris, but I really missed my first midnight in Singapore. Everything was in good order then, and people were friendly. Why are mega cities so different?
