我是在国内念的研究生，赶上改革开放，有幸当了国内第一批博士。只是在上世纪 80-90 年代，才与外国教授有些交往。那时我已经博士毕业，自己已经有了一个明晰的研究方向。 1986年我在加拿大多伦多大学短暂访问，想写信给狄拉克介绍自己如何发展他的符号法，可惜他已经仙逝。看到John Klauder 写的《 Coherent States 》书，内中引用了我的《 SU（3） 电荷 - 超荷相干态》的文章，就写信与他联系。没想到他马上坐飞机从新泽西到多伦多来看我。 Klauder 是首先在数学结构方面建立相干态的专家，曾经担任《 Journal of Mathematical Physics 》的主编和国际数学物理协会主席。他是惠勒的学生，费曼的师弟，与诺贝尔奖得主Schwinger是好友。为人坦率豪爽，他想邀请我去美国与他合作研究，但当时他在 AT&TBellLab 工作，于是就写信给他的的大学朋友推荐我，信中写道： "I consider Prof. Fan to be an expert of the highest caliber in the general field of coherent states and their applications. He has published quite extensively in this field, and in so doing, he has contributed a number of highly original ideas." 1993 年 Klauder 又写道： Prof. Fan is the creator and developer of arguably one of the most important mathematical and physical tools since the introduction of coherent states, namely the technique of "Integration Within an Ordered Product (IWOP)。In my view, this method is a profound advance the value of which has hardly been scratched。 It virtues may be partially appreciated by the remark that the IWOP technique allows one to integrate (or differentiate), for example, non-commuting operators with a total disregard for their lack of commutation."... Prof.Fan's work is an important contribution to the further development of Dirac's symbolic method and representation theory."

可见他毫不掩饰对我的研究成果的钦佩。在他的数次盛情邀请下，我出席了国际相干态会议并当了顾问，他十分相信我，还对我讲了对另一量子光学专家xxx 的一些愤懑，认为此人好争发明权。后来在 1995 年， Klauder 到合肥来访问我。我让研究生叶雄陪他逛街，结果他去了逍遥津公园的儿童乐园，爬上以象鼻形象设计的滑滑梯，童心大发，从梯上笑笑吟吟地滑下来。我陪 Klauder 游览歙县老街时，一家商店的老板要我怂恿 Klauder 买他的高价货，说得来的钱给我一半作为回扣。我直摇头， Klauder 不懂中文，问我何故摇头，我如实用英语相告，他很赞赏我的为人，又与我同行去了桂林、都江堰和拉萨。在游都江堰时，一排好几辆三轮车见有老外，就跟着他希望他搭乘，他得意地对我说， I have an army 。他一直希望我将我的研究成果写成英文书出版，可惜我觉得英文还不够地道，而终于未写。

 我的另一个朋友是德国的 Alfred Wunsche ，他非常欣赏我的发展Dirac 符号法的文章，他发表了一篇题为 <About integration within ordered products in quantum optics> 的 Review 文章（ J. Opt. B: Quantum-Semiclass. Opt. 1(1999) R11-R12), 文中写道： In this paper ， I try to illuminate the method of integration within ordered products and to consider its fundamentals and in doing so contribute to its acceptance by a greater community." 1999 年我在意大利 Trieste 访问时，他自费从柏林坐飞机来与我合作，还一起去了威尼斯游览。他是非常正直、严谨、善良的科学家，喜欢观赏植物。后来他到合肥来看我，我陪他去逛裕丰花市，他看到卖狗的笼子，就很同情关在笼子里的狗，并再三说不能吃狗肉。他还很气愤地对我述说有一个华人如何肆意地剽窃他的论文。

 我还收有不少外国同行称赞我论文的信和论文抽印本，例如 C. T. Lee 教授（ Alabama Agri-culture & Mechanical University ）指出： I have been following Prof. Fan's publications very closely because I am also working in the same general area; namely, Theoretical Quantum Optics. He has published so many papers in such a short time, it is really amazing 。 Apparently， he has done most of these works single-handedly. Based on his productivity, he should be ranked among the top-notch scientists in the world. 外国文献中出现的类似的 " 点赞 " 不少，就不在这里一一列举了。

 Klauder 和 Wunsche 都比我大十来岁，他俩给我的印象是十分尊重有真本事的人，不掩饰其钦佩之感，所谓 " 平生不解藏人善，到处逢人说项斯 " 。我祝福他们健康长寿。
