古德曼说，目前对科研不端（scientific misconduct）的定义仅限于捏造或伪造数据和剽窃（fabricating or falsifying data and plagiarism），但是公众可能从更广泛的定义中受益，该定义包括故意操纵数据和统计学（deliberate manipulation of data and statistics）。统计学把戏可能比直接伪造更常见（Statistical tricks may be a lot more common than outright falsification.）。如果两者都导致错误的结果和印象，对潜在患者的危害是相同的。
