偶然看到久违的《希腊棺材之谜》，随便翻了几页；又想看看有什么好的英文版，没有想象的多；有本未来的新版，封面是一个花花字母Q——大概是代表作者ElleryQueen——于是发现一个新的企鹅系列：Penguin Drop Caps。

drop cap即initial cap，也就是正文里开头那个特殊设计的大号字母，在老书里常见，漂亮极了。下面是我从1908年版Ptolemy’sGeography: A Brief Account of All the PrintedEditions Down to 1730（London: Henry Stevens, Son & Stiles, 1908）里随便选的几段：

如今的书偶尔也能看见章节开头戴帽子，但简约多了，字母背后没有风景也没有人物。

这个企鹅新系列的字母是字体专家Jessica Hische设计的，共26本，如A forJane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice，B for Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre，C for Willa Cather’s My Ántonia，D for Charles Dickens’ GreatExpectations，E for George Eliot’s Middlemarch，F for Gustave Flaubert’s MadameBovary (translation by Lydia Davis)……

企鹅做这个系列，显然意在发扬传统：For the book lover, theseries is a nod to the tradition of printing and the distribution of ideas,stories, and opinions—ranging from paper to digital media.
